Well, the spring bank holiday felt more like winter with northerly winds, rain and even a bit of snow and hail. That didn't put anglers off though, they still went out to try their luck. Darren Swan won the Seaham Club comp with a codling of 8.65lb, with George Hope taking the heaviest fish - a codling of 3.75lb from The Blast beach. (So maybe it was a bit too early to put your winter gear away!). A few codling were also taken from Ryhope cliffs and from Hendon Prom. Better ...sized flounders have started to show in the River Wear with fish up to 1.5lb and are taking a mix of runnydown, mackerel and crab. The odd sized codling have been taken from The White Wall and The Tins as well as the Rat House Corner - crab has been the top bait for these fish. South Shields pier has seen a few sized codling up to 2lb along with a few sized coalfish - again crab has been the top bait. The River Tyne is still producing codling up to 3lb and good numbers of flounders. The codling are coming out between Jarrow Riverside Park and Hebburn Marina. Up river of The Schooner has been best for flounders. Travelling anglers have found some good fish at Silloth Prom with thornback rays, bull huss, smoothhounds and dogfish all taken. The ever popular flat rock at Balcary has also seen double figure thornbacks and bull huss. The Morecombe area and the Hull coastline have started to produce smouthhounds in fair numbers.
