Just two of the staggeringly beautiful “Mirror” lines written anonymously by members of our audience about someone else in the room, at our Tuesday Salon. Together these heart-filling observations made up the evening’s improvised poem, put together in the interval by three of our very talented writers, Sarah Grout, Steph Wessell and Catherine Craig. It’s hard to put into words how it feels to see all your Salon hopes and dreams come together into such a beautiful, warm and nourishing night of shared creativity. We’re so very very grateful to everyone who was with us last night, so engaged, encouraging and supportive of one another. At their core, these evenings are about human connections: sharing a space with a group of strangers, listening to each other, appreciating what they have to offer, and realising that our jour...neys have all been shared at one point or another. One of the more intriguing mirrors in art, in Jan van Eyck’s portrait of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife. Van Eyck was intensely interested in the effects of light - and here his mirror reflects two figures in the doorway. Arnolfini raises his right hand as he faces them, possibly as a greeting. My dad took a series of black and white photographs of reflections in various objects, when I was little and we were still living in Poland. He’s always been very curious about the world, about turning things on their head, seeing things with a fresh eye and a skewed view... “Monette and Mady are identical twins. They have lived their whole life closely together and are, as they say, inseparable. I first saw them on the streets of Paris and I was instantly fascinated by their identical outfits and synchronized corporal language. Quirky and beautiful, they stood out from any crowd. As I couldn’t quite believe my eyes, I remember thinking that they might not be real. When I approached them I was not surprised to discover that they often finish each... other’s sentences and that they refer to themselves as ‘I’ instead of ‘we’.” We love the dreamlike quality of the ‘Monette and Mady project’ by Swedish photographer Maja Daniels. The London-based artist continues to document this beautiful series - “an intimate journal of togetherness” - which explores questions of identity, intimacy and challenges preconceived notions of aging.
