About Salt And Malt

Salt & Malt, tearoom, fish cafe and takeaway features a menu of fresh seafood and fish dishes to complement its waterside location on Chew Valley Lake.

Salt And Malt Description

For opening hours & contact details for Salt & Malt Chew Valley Lake and Salt & Malt Wapping Wharf, please visit: www. saltmalt.com

Brainchild of the Eggleton family, owners of the Michelin starred The Pony & Trap, Salt & Malt Tearoom and Fish Cafe overlooks spectacular views of Chew Valley Lake.

We have a very popular fish and chip takeaway, a cafe which transforms into a restaurant in the evenings, an ice cream parlour and enough seating outside for up to 200 people. We also serve home baked cakes, quiches and sandwiches.

To the delight of coeliacs we offer a gluten free fish & chip menu, as well as fresh mussels, squid, crab and line caught fish dishes sourced from the Cornish Coast where possible. Handmade burgers made from beef sourced locally from Blagdon Butchers and bangers from local artisan charcutier Vincent Castellano. Everything is handmade on site with fish delivered each day from Cornwall. ”

The team is passionate about creating a family friendly, down to earth cafe to put the Chew Valley on the culinary map with a local gluten free takeaway.

Lovely mention from Somerset Life 🙌🏼

User

We’ve been several times, yesterday I had my Father with me who is disabled and rather frail. The staff were amazing. The food is if the highest quality, the staff can’t do enough to make your visit the best possible experience. My father couldn’t stop praising the Salt & Malt.

User

THE best fish, chips and peas ever!! Can’t fault it! Great scenery whilst you fill your belly with awesome food!

User

Lovely place . Came over today with my 3 and 4 year old ( just for a coffee and an ice cream ) staff were really friendly , and welcoming to my children will be back soon

User

I visited the place by the lake with my partner and friends yesterday and we all were very impressed. We had the traditional battered fish and chips and it was exceptional! Lovely juicy fish, crispy, not greasy batter, light tasty chips, lovely curry sauce and mushy peas. Very friendly and helpful staff as well. The only little downside is that it can get a bit noisy when the place is full of people, and the toilets were slightly "sticky", but nothing to worry about. Will be definitely coming back, well done!

User

Excellent experience at Salt and Malt, even if they were extremely busy Sunday lunchtime. We had to queue and wait to be seated, but once seated were very impressed by the beautiful decor and stunning lake views. They run "order at the bar" system so everything was quick, we didn't need to wait long for drinks or food to be delivered to us. We aren't fish and chips eaters, but we ordered a burger meal and mussels. These were amazing, no surprise why so many people eat mussels there. Compliments to the chef! My burger was top class, perfect! We tried the cooked deserts, these were delicious too!

The staff were very helpful and friendly despite the busy time. Nice clean large toilets, large outdoor seating area. We had a superb experience in the restaurant and will recommend you to everyone! Thanks a lot!

User

Booked table for 13 people night b4 with ease, excellent service and friendly staff clean resturant very cosy seating with a view of chew valley lake and the food was cooked to perfection large portions all fresh fish you got to try it 6 stars all the way some may say its pricey for fish and chips but its well worth the money and you will return i cant wait for nx time belly full 😊😊😊

User

Beautiful setting (Chew Lake) and excellent quality fish and chips. We really enjoyed it and will be back ASAP. The fish was very fresh and amazing batter, oh and don’t get us started on the curry sauce .... yum yum.

User

That has to be one of the best fish & chips I've ever had ham egg an chips was great as well

User

Second visit for fish and chips both really good. The batter was crispy but not fatty chips were also lovely and crisp but not fatty. Ordered large but it was too much to eat. Sat outside in the lovely sunshine over looking the lake

User

Really enjoy coming to the Salt & Malt at Chew Valley Lake. Staff are friendly and food has always been yummy!

HOWEVER at todays visit I found out that the fish finger burger was removed from the menu. Chef and GM are trying out something new. To be honest its disappointing as the fish finger burger was amazing and a lot of people I know loved it just as much! Yes the menu has some newness but a curried type burger seems odd! If customers opinion counts I would love the the the f/f burger back on the menu!

User

Yes Visited today and was very disappointed the food was tasteless the chips overcooked and dried up.but worst of all was the service and the rudeness of the staff.one couple left without even touching their meal because of the rudeness of the waitress and this was witnessed by lots of other diners very very poor

User

I went to the harbourside branch for the 2nd time last Thursday and was really disappointed. The first time I was really impressed so was looking forward to a return visit. Unfortunately this time was a completely different experience. The fish was ok but chips were hard and dry, obviously been hanging around and the peas were dried up and cold. When it came to paying as I had to get back to work there was nobody around, I waited ages and was tempted to just leave but my honesty got the better of me eventhough I was late back. I won't be returning.

User

Beautiful location but disappointing service and food. I arrived before a couple and was served after them... The main dish was overtly too salty..I lost count of how many times I was asked if I liked the food.. Just once would have been sufficient.. And finally my desert was picked up before I ‘d finished eating.. soo embarrassed to have to say that I hadn’t finished it..

This is the first and last time that I will come here also the first time that I’ve ever felt the need to write a review, and hopefully the last..

User

Went to Malt and Salt on Saturday evening for a family meal. We had to wait a good 20 minutes for a table, even though there were plenty of empty table, then at least 30 minutes to give a food order. Of the seven of us five received meals, two of us received nothing. After receiving very poor service at Malt and Salt in Bristol it seems its something Malt and Salt specialise in. I will never go to Malt and Salt again & will never dare recommend it. There are plenty of places who will value my custom .... obviously Malt and Salt is not one of them.

User

Went for my birthday lunch on Thursday and ordered cod & chips. Service quite promp despite every table in use. Meal arrived looking good but with a strong smell of garlic! Whose stupid idea was it to add garlic to the accompanying peas? Much as I enjoy garlic I do not like it with traditional fish & chips and neither did the diners either side of us apparently as they left theirs too. The fish was fine but the chips were dry and over cooked. All in all very disappointing meal. Would go for fish finger sandwiches (had before) next time.

User

Well this was an experience... went into the restaurant... 'Come back in half an hour - you don't want to be waiting with children' so despite the rain we thought ok (a hungry 2 & 3 yr old in tow). Went back after half an hour, to be told 'I don't know when a table will be available Madam' ( dripping with sarcasm). So...I ask 'you said come back in half an hour for a table'..'yes' came the prompt response...me...'well now you're saying you don't know when a table will be available' (at this point the woman starts to look less comfortable. 'Yes thats right'. Oh ok...well that was a waste of time. So at that point we left..with 2 even more hungry grandchildren.

Seems to me that the staff don't have the customer service skills to manage when under stress - (an apology for wasting our time would have been welcomed). Won't be returning, will stick to picnics in the van thank you!

User

If you are a vegetarian, don't bother with the veggie options.. e.g. the halloumi.. we ordered a child's fish and chips and an adults halloumi. The halloumi was picked up and placed directly on top of the raw fish in the same hand, dipped in the same batter to be fried in front of us. When I stopped the chef and queried why he was placing the cheese on top of the raw fish and didn't have a small pot of veggie batter he simple stated what's the problem, we cook it all in the same batter, shrugged and turned away. I asked if the chips were cooked seperately he said yes. Then ignored the obvious solution. I took a refund and left.. madness and rubbish customer service.. I actually suggested the halloumi as a veggie option on facebook when they first opened as there was nothing apart from chips! .. sad as I also notcied the boxes have shrunk now so smaller portions.. shame as it was great when they first opened..

User

I went to the Salt & Malt at cargo by the harbourside in Bristol today and I was very disappointed.

It took 20 mins for a sausage and chips to take away, no apology from the staff for the wait and then when I opened the box they had not given me what I had ordered.

I was really looking forward to trying salt & malt so much, but I don't think I would go back again.

User

Had to wait for nearly an hour for fish and chips. Only asked twice if it would be much longer yet th staff had the nerve to be rude as the food finally arrived. Avoid.
