What to eat before your workout:
šŸŽƒ Pumpkin seeds - full of protein, zinc, iron and magnesium -- all good for muscular health and bone strength
šŸ„‘ Avocados - high levels of oleic acid in avocados help with cellular repair and work to reduce inflammation in the body
... šŸŸ Salmon - Those omega-3 fatty acids and protein make this superfood a serious go-to for prime energy and satiation before you hit the gym
šŸ‡ Prunes - can help increase bone strength and density, thanks to the superfood's vitamin K, magnesium, potassium, and boron. A handful of prunes will give you a nice jolt of easy-to-digest fuel before you get your sweat on (more to these than helping you šŸ’© !)
šŸ„œ Walnuts - packed with omega-3's, alpha-linolenic acid, vitamin E, manganese, copper, and even melatonin -- good for the bones, coordination, and they help you sleep? Pop a few before you head into your next workout.
Some inspiration for your weekend shop...

GREEN TEA ā˜•ļø
It's not everyone's cup of tea (sorry!) but there are a lot of health benefits to this little super drink... here are a few:
šŸ’Ŗ Strong bones and muscles - research suggests that people who regularly drink green tea had higher bone mineral density (indicating healthy bones) compared to those who did not consume green tea on a regular basis.
... ā¤ļø Keeps your ticker healthy - green tea can help lower blood pressure, LDL cholesterol (sometimes known as "bad cholesterol"), and triglyceride levels. Green tea is also associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.
šŸ¤§ Strengthen immune system - the antioxidants in green tea can help ward off infections, plus drinking green tea may even improve teeth and gum health
To make the most of the benefits you need to drink ideally around 3 cups a day and drinking before your workout can even give your results a boost! šŸ‘Š

FOAM ROLLERS Have you seen these, but unsure what they are for?
Foam rollers are exercise devices used for self-massage. They help to soothe tight and sore muscles areas, can help improve mobility and help speed up muscle recovery.
... The ā€˜rollingā€™ on tight muscles is a method of 'myofascial release' (which is a fancy way of saying relaxing painful muscles) with the best results occurring when you combine 30 ā€“ 90 seconds of rolling combined with static stretches for the affected area.
The lightweight tubes are made from compressed foam, with rollers coming in different firmnessā€™s. If you are new to foam rolling itā€™s best to start with a softer roller as this can be a painful especially on sore muscles.

Yesterday I finished couch to 5k and ā€˜graduatedā€™ from the coached course I completed with Sandwell leisure trust at Tipton sports academy. On the first class, I couldnā€™t run for 1 minute without stopping I was so unfit. However, last night, only 8 weeks later, I ran for 5.27km (3.27 miles) without stopping. Not once. I was slower than a tortoise in peanut butter, but I ran all the way.

Iā€™ll be honest, there were tough moments when I thought I couldnā€™t do it, but the camaraderie and support of #teamtipton got me through.

I wouldnā€™t be where I am without this course, Iā€™d have probably given up at week 4/5. But no. I can run 5k. Give it a go, youā€™ll be amazed at what you can achieve if you believe in yourself and join a group activity!

What a fantastic opportunity. I really enjoyed the Couch to 5K session Tipton Sports Academy. Whilst I have been running for a while, I wanted to work on my pace.

I feel great, met some wonderful people and the staff were really friendly, supportive and encouraging.

Our coach was truly amazing too (Hayley).

It doesn't matter whether you are a hard-core gym attendee or have just started, you are made to feel welcome and at ease.

I have a One Card and find it's great value for money. You have the option of attending over 7 leisure centres where a range of activities are available and discounts on racket sports and golf.

So why wait, sign up for a one card and reap the rewards.

Three and a half years ago I had a quadruple heart bypass and could barely get out of the chair to make a coffee and it's been very hard to motivate myself to do any worthwhile structured exercise, that is until I joined the Tipton Couch25k group nine weeks ago which I'm proud to say I alongside about 80 others graduated this week. I can only offer praise to the coaches, especially Haley who spurred everyone on every week offering encouragement to us all.

Completing this course has genuinely altered my life and my whole outlook to health and exercise and have even finished 2 x 5k Parkruns, something I could have only have dreamed of previously.

So a big big thank you for giving me the opportunity and if I can do it, anyone can!

Ok I found the review section.

Right a bit of history on my part first. I've tried to be fit for most of my life though I'm a heavy guy. I ride several types of bike but not as much as I'd like. I've also been Britsh Military Fitness member for nearly 10 years. In the last 4 years I've taken part in several long charity runs such as the Birmingham 10k runs, half marathons and even muddy obstacle course races . I'm a regular walker too and compete in fitbit challenges. Running is something I've never been very consistent at and this program has helped change that. I took part in the program based at Portway and was quite nervous to start with. Well I need not have been. Everyone was very encouraging and other the course of the program my running became much more consistent and my pace even increased. Our little running group became quite social to as well if many of us chatting over Facebook regularly and at our weekly runs. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program completely without reservation. Just keeping put one foot in front of the other. There is more inside you than you might otherwise think. Hopefully I'll see you out running or jogging somewhere soon.

Last night, along side the rest of team Tipton, I completed the couch to 5k course that was being held at Tipton Sports Academy. When I signed up it was to prove a point that in 9 weeks there was no way I could go from a complete non runner to running 5k. Wow! How wrong I was! The course has completely changed how I look at my fitness, I'm addicted to running and will become a regular to the track at the sports academy now. My cardio has improved drastically, my recovery rate is amazing and my general fitness has come on in leaps and bounds. None of this would've been possible without the fantastic staff that were involved and ofcourse to the fabulous coach Hayley, who was constantly cheering us on and motivating us any way she could. She is a credit to the SLT team! If anyone is considering trying the course I strongly recommend you go for it, it's amazing and will change your life. Not to mention the other awesome things that the Sports Academy and SLT have to offer. Check it out, you won't regret it.

Iā€™ve just finished the best 9 week experience ever! Absolutely terrified at the start and doubtful that I could ever gain the stamina and fitness to run a whole 5k but here we are and I have achieved the impossible! ļæ½ The whole TSA team were amazingly supportive and the entire plan was so well organised and executed, so a massive thank you to you all (extra special thanks to Hayley and Paul). Iā€™ve met some wonderful people and are so grateful to you all for your encouragement and kind words. #goteamtipton xx

I've only been going a couple of weeks and I've joined the 'One Card Membership' and for Ā£28 the value is amazing! I visit 3 centres which are all new and modern, the range of fitness classes is huge and varied and I love having the option of going to the different classes and swimming. All the staff are lovely. Its fantastic value and I think we're so lucky to have so may centres to use in the Sandwell Area.

I would like to say how impressed I am with Kirk wildman at Portway leisure centre and his delivery of classes. It was sad to see Hayley go but she promised Kirk would continue to work us hard and oh boy he does. He is a fantastic instructor with a unique teaching style. His attitude is very professional but he is also friendly and inspiring. He is firm and extremely motivating and brings out the best in the customers ļæ½

I joined the couch to 5K 9 weeks ago. I'd always wanted to get into running but have always backed out because I was convinced I just couldn't do it, I just wasn't meant to run. Well after 9 weeks I am now running 5K without stopping and it's all down to the support of the lovely group and SLT. I would 1000% recommend! Thank you so much for helping me find something I love doing.

I have been using SLT facilities for 12 years, since I moved to the area. Haden Hill is my second home, I love it. The fitness class timetable is second to none! I've been going to gyms and leisure centres for nearly 30 years; SLT are by far the best. Great work, keep it up!

I attend SLT fitness classes and the gym, along with playing netball outside of this yet i was unable to run more than a few minutes without needing to walk. I signed up to the couch to 5k programme with little expectation that this would change. On wednesday i graduated having run the whole 5k without stopping in an amazing 36mins. I am so proud of myself for sticking with it but couldnt have done it without the excellent support of Hayley and the SLT team along with the rest of the group. I've attended Smethwick Swimming Centre for well over a decade now and seen many positive changes. Staff at this centre are warm and professional and seem to form friendly relationships with members. I know them all by name and vice versa.

The instructors have all been passionate, supportive and personable - one or two are genuinely exemplary (Emma on Saturday mornings for example) so I've always had a good experience.

The real beauty of SSC is the sense of community amongst the regular members - lovely, friendly ward people who form a mutually supportive network that is a pleasure to be a part of. It takes a healthy environment to engender such an atmosphere. All offered at tremendous value - Well done SLT!

I'd only suggest that instructors are given more of an opportunity to influence programming decisions and utilise their full range of skills to the benefit of members.

User

The facilities are good however when there's an instructor off or sick nothing happens.

This is rubbish in this day and age. They should be able to get cover.

The managers need to try some of the instructors classes. Especially zumba. Friday Portway class you couldn't get into them in the past. Now it's a ghost session. Instructor lovely I'm sure but i could burn more calories trying to get into one of the coded doors.

Also given Southwick's ethnic mix and the studies for higher risk of diabetes why has Harry Mitchell been run down to hardly any classes. This used to be a thriving studio with locals walking to classes including me. Now I drive to portway. Sandwell should do more to bring this back to life. This is a crime to the local community.

User

Recently joined SLT and am so excited about all the classes available across the Centres. I have only so far been to Wednesbury and did two brilliant classes. I was very disappointed to see that the water fountains barely give out water, you will be there all day if you want to get a cupful. On speaking to other members apparently the fountains are all same at Wednesbury and it is accepted as the norm. The showers were also disappointing by having to press the button for water every 5 seconds. Come on Wednesbury whats going on??

User

I have been a member of SLT for a number of years mainly using haden hill. I use the gym regularly which is amazing With great staff and kept clean and to a high standard. However reallly disappointed with swimming and steam and sauna facilities lately as I have a 2 year old son who loves swimming and the pool has recently become too cold for him to enjoy and changing rooms and sauna and steam dirty. Standards appear to have dropped lately. Portway gym area not much better as machines were mouldy when I tried facilities. ļæ½

I have been a member of SLT for a number of years mainly using haden hill. I use the gym regularly which is amazing With great staff and kept clean and to a high standard. However reallly disappointed with swimming and steam and sauna facilities lately as I have a 2 year old son who loves swimming and the pool has recently become too cold for him to enjoy and changing rooms and sauna and steam dirty. Standards appear to have dropped lately. Portway gym area not much better as machines were mouldy when I tried facilities. ļæ½
