About Save Preston Bus Station

Save Preston Bus Station Description

The Save Preston Bus Station campaign group successfully saved the city's most loved and well known building from the persistent and relentless determination of Preston City Council's goal to demolish it and replace it with a flat surface car park.

The building achieved Grade 2 Listed Status in recognition of its heritage value and architectural merit.

Its new owners, Lancashire County Council, have a multi million pound redevelopment plan for the building including the provision of a brand new youth zone.

PERMANENTLY CLOSED: Today sees the closure of the subway between Grade II Listed Preston Bus Station and Preston Guild Hall which also led to the taxi rank. The other two subways that lead out of the bus station are also to be sealed up.
Do you agree with the decision or would you have handled the subways differently, also by what year do you think they will reopen as part of Preston's "lost history" ?
The image is from a walkway in Stevenage which features a frieze of past & present sports personalities from the town and shows how similar spaces can be reinvigorated.

It's 3 years today since people power saved Grade 2 Listed Preston Bus Station from the councillors that pushed for demolition!

It may not be on the same scale as Grade II Listed Preston Bus Station but a far smaller development in the city has seen Jam Imani Rad, 66, sentenced to 6 months in prison.

It's Day 2 of 3 of a small exhibition at Stands 3 & 4 of Preston Bus Station as Lancashire County Council display the revised renovation plans for the Grade 2 Listed Building and the Youth Zone.
Amendments were made to the winning entry in order to gain consent from Historic England, formerly English Heritage and also a thumbs up from the The Twentieth Century Society.
Staff from Lancashire County Council are on hand until 5.30pm today and tomorrow from 8.30am to 12.30pm to a...nswer questions.

The recent stormy weather has damaged some of the glazing at Grade 2 Listed Preston Bus Station, resulting in the western side of the building being closed off and buses diverted to the eastern apron.
This arrangement will be how the building operates in the future once the new Youth Zone is built and and the Western area turned into an open plaza.

The Conservative MP for Rossendale & Darwen, Jake Berry, has criticised Lancashire County Council for spending money on Grade 2 Listed Preston Bus Station, calling it "the ugliest building in Britain".
Listed status for the building was recommended by English Heritage (Historic England) and approved by the Conservative MP Cabinet member, and Culture Secrteary Ed Vaizey in September 2013.

Happy 46th Birthday to Preston's most famous (and most loved) building!

The Broad, a brand new $140m gallery in California designed by the same architects as New York's The High Line has recently been compared to Preston's most famous building.
It wasn't so long ago that Grade 2 Listed Preston Bus Station was under threat of demolition by the city council with suggestions that the site could be made into a flat ground level car park.

Happy Anniversary!
It's 2 years today since Preston Bus Station became "Grade 2 Listed Preston Bus Station" and the city Councillors' demolition goal was finally put to rest. It may appear as though not much has happened since then but the ownership of the building has changed from Preston City Council to Lancashire County Council and various changes have been made behind the scenes, including cleaning!
On top of that that there has been the international design competition... organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the winning design of which will now go through many more stages, including a review by Historic England (formerly English Heritage), before any changes are made to the building or its surrounding spaces.
Prominent Save Preston Bus Station campaigner John Wilson was asked for his views for an article by Blog Preston: http://blogpreston.co.uk/…/preston-bus- station-two-years-o…/

We should keep this imposing building as its a fantastic example of a kind of architecture that is gone, for the best? May be, but it's big, strong, in your face and weathers all, it's Prestonian through and through KEEP IT, sell it to some company who can think out of the box and make it pay, flats, retail, Lesiure I don't care, just keep it

The most iconic structure in Preston. And a part of history. The largest bus station, dock basin and civilian cemetary in Europe.

User

It is in a good spot for everyone it closes to the town centre and handy for the old people to get to they should not nock it down they should spend money by doing it up which would be much better

User

Is it not possible for young and creative architects to integrate this fabulous historic and prominent local feature into their new plans? I'm all for something new and a revamp for the area but I cannot believe that such thoughts have entered heads to demolish history. It's Preston's "Great Wall".

I'm not from Preston, and was walking through the City centre, I turned a corner and was almost knocked off my feet at the first sight of this stunning building. Truly unique in Britain.

I love it Preston buss station

As a visitor to Preston on Tuesday, I made a special effort to find the bus station. Not over easy when we got lost in the one way street of the Guildhall. But worth it. I knew the station in the mid 1980s. It has lost none of its charm. So good to see money being spent. Please do keep all the signs and the seats in the cafe! What an era! Us in far away Hexham have lost our charming 1932 market town bus station.

Petitioned for this Historic Building to be saved when in Radio Presenting.....A Grade 2 Listed Building & A Major North~West Transport Hub that Links the Whole of the Northern Route to Accessible Areas. We need Buildings like this to STAY.

User

Dont like it but its different so why not do something with it not just knock it down or we will never keep our history

User

Terrible terrible service. Just waited til 1.30 for the 1.15 number 61 to leave! No reason given probably because they don't care whether the passengers are late or not!!! Absolutely shocking!

My first visit in many years. Buildings in the middle of renovations, no cafe, dirty, muddled, drivers blocking narrow walkways to chat, buses not always starting from assigned bays, tempory exits confusing, ladies loo in portacabin. Can only improve.
