Save The Nhs Bursary - Unison West Midlands Description
George Osborne used his 2015 autumn statement to set out plans to cut the NHS bursary. This will impact anyone who hopes to train to become a nurse, midwife, or allied health professional from August 2017.
Healthcare courses are unlike other courses. . . .
Nurses spend 50% of their training time working for the NHS on UNPAID clinical placements.
Students nurses don’t get a summer or Easter break, so have limited opportunity for paid employment to supplement their finances.
The starting salary for a qualified nurse is £22, 799
UNISON research shows that even with the student bursary, over 50% of student nurses consider leaving their course before graduation. The biggest single reason is financial difficulty.
A recent survey in the Nursing Times revealed that 60% of their readers would not have pursued a career in nursing without the bursary, UNISON's survey reveals 85% of students and qualified healthcare professionals would not pursue a career in healthcare without the bursary.
