About Scher & Marks Opticians

Scher & Marks Opticians EST 1972. independent opticians based in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, selling wide ranges of frames.

Scher & Marks Opticians Description

Scher and marks opticians began its original incarnation as Edmonton opticians and was opened in Hertford road, Edmonton, in 1968 by husband and wife Bernard and Jacqueline scher. The Schers then relocated to 10, north mall, Edmonton green in 1972 and edmonton opticians was amongst the first batch of shops to be built in the shopping centre and indeed was inhabited by the Schers whilst the shopping centre was being built around them.

In 1972, Russell Scher, (Fado mfdo) bernards son, joined the firm making it a continuous family business, and indeed added to the great reputation that Bernard had started for the family.

Darren marks then joined the firm in 1989, so three generations of the same family were now working together, and he studied under the tutelage of Mr. Bernard Scher.

Jamie marks then also joined the firm in 1993 and both brothers worked for many years under the guidance of Mr Bernard Scher, their grandfather.

Bernard Scher sadly passed away in 2010.

Jacqueline and Bernie believed in four basic guiding principles to running a successful practice :
Good service, good attitude, good products and good prices, something, to this day, many decades after its formation, that scher and marks still strive to emulate.

Our philosophy :
At scher and marks we want to give our patients the broadest range of frames possible, with hundreds of free frames for under 16's and also patients with nhs entitlement, all the way up to the best known designer names, and everything in between

A charity that we feel are doing incredible work and would love for you to show your support to also are the Children's Eye Foundation (CEF).
When problems with vision are caught early they can often be fixed or prevented. CEF's primary goal is to help children to see well & have good vision for life, and to prevent the #1 cause of vision loss among children, amblyopia (lazy eye).

Browing the internet, we've found some funny reasons our fellow opticians have heard for broken glasses!
1. Patient: “I ran over my glasses with my car.” – Dr. Sara Erlich, Hackensack, NJ
2. Patient: “My dog sat on my glasses.” – Susan Klein Friday, Optica, Natick, MA
... 3. Patient: “I opened the case and they were like this.” – Julie, Calgary, AB, Canada
4. Patient: “I flushed it down an industrial-strength Bank of America toilet.” – Dr. Beth S., New York, NY 5. Optometrist: “How did you break these?”
Patient: “I was playing soccer.”
Optometrist: “Oh, took a ball to the face?”
Patient: “Uh, no, I gave them to my mom and she put them in her pocket and sat down on them.” – Dr. Mark Foust, Eye Contact Vision Center, Rock Hill, SC
6. Patient: “I need new glasses. Mine are now oven-baked, not fried.” – Dr. Christina Dixon, Eagle Eye Vision Center, Stafford, VA
7. “[The patient] went to throw some garbage in the dumpster and heard an odd noise. She opened the dumpster and out jumps this angry rabid squirrel that attacked her face. Ended up scratching the lenses terribly and she fell, which lead to the frames getting mangled.” – Dr. Nick Jankowski, Mt. View EyeCare Center, Vancouver, WA
8. Patient: “My cat ate my glasses.” – Dr. Nick Jankowski, Mt. View EyeCare Center, Vancouver, WA
9. Patient: “I haven’t seen my best friend in many years. We decided to have a glass of wine on my front porch. What comes next, I found myself running down the street in my birthday suit in the rain in the dark and lost my glasses in the process. There was no way I was going to walk around my neighborhood the next day or ever find it again.” – Dr. Lan T. Nguyen, Optometrist, Round Rock, TX
10. Optometrist: “How did your glasses break?”
8-year-old patient: “My brother stepped on them.”
Mom and patient begin to laugh.
Optometrist: “What’s so funny about your brother stepping on your glasses?”
Patient: “I was wearing them when he stepped on my face.” – Dr. Paul Woolf, Woolf EyeCare Center, Gilbert, AZ

We appreciate kids (and pets) LOVE lasers. But following on from a post we made a few weeks ago; with the huge increase in availability of types and powers, please make sure that the laser you buy are safe (within regulation) and NEVER let children use them at a toy.
This poor young man was playing with a laser and has caused what may be irreversible damage to his eyes.

These are marbles. They are easily lost if you’re unable to see them. That’s why you should have your prescription checked every two years (at least) to ensure that your numbers are still correct. (And also so that you don’t lose any marbles you may or may not own.)

Taking Omega-3 supplements for your dry eye symptoms? The solution could in fact be all in your head. A recent study found that "Omega-3 fatty acid supplements taken orally proved no better than placebo at relieving symptoms or signs of dry eye”. Although he’s not wrong, we’re beginning to understand why this generation is fuelled on sarcasm.

For everyone who despises taking things one step at a time, just know that the days of having this rubbed in your face are numbered. Figuratively. Soon machines will have learned how we walk and soon… maybe soon… two steps at a time! “Using new technologies to track how vision guides foot placement, researchers at The University of Texas at Austin come one step closer in determining what is going on in the brain while we walk, paving the way for better treatment for mobility impairments -- strokes, aging and Parkinson's -- and technology development -- prosthetics and robots.”

We found this article particularly interesting. An international team has developed a tool which can accurately tell a person’s eye colour, skin tone and hair colour from a single piece of DNA! With a number of possible applications, the most notable are crime scene analysis to identify suspects and archaeological remains.

And just in case you were wondering (you probably weren’t, but…) - The eagle eye is among the strongest in the animal kingdom, with an eyesight estimated at 4 to 8 times stronger than that of the average human. An eagle is said to be able to spot a rabbit 3.2 km away. Although an eagle may only weigh 10 pounds (4.5 kg), its eyes are roughly the same size as those of a human.

SO you’re thinking about going to the beach. We bet you thought this day would never come: a day in the UK filled with sunshine. After enduring a cold winter and…snow in March 😒🙄.
We just ask that you don’t forget to protect the eyes of your little ones. 80% of the UV damage caused to your eyes happens before you’re 18.
At Scher & Marks, you can get a free pair of sunglasses when you purchase a regular pair for anyone under the age of 16: goo.gl/WTB1tw

If you’re having to hold books so close to your face that you can practically smell the seam, it’s time for you to consider reading glasses.
But in all seriousness, struggling to read at close distances can creep up on you over time. If you find yourself squinting or struggling to read average-sized text at arm’s length, do give us a call and get a test booked in.

Food can quite literally be as good as it looks. Just as important as regular check-ups and exercise, your diet can also have a positive effect on the health of your eyes.
