Sports Direct: Serious About Health and Safety
Recently Sports Direct held the first ever Health and Safety seminar, at the Head Office in Shirebrook.
Sports Direct invited contractors and sub-contractors to discuss health and safety and collaborate on future working practices. The event will be held annually to help raise awareness of working environments and best practices that support our in-house teams and contractors, as well as customer welfare.
... We had a helping hand from our partners ISG, Clyde and Co, HSS, Cromwell and Tool Arrest . We would like to thank them for making the day go smoothly and enjoyable.
William Ferguson, Head of Facilities and Procurement, who ran the seminar on behalf of the group.
“Sports Direct want to set a new standard in best practices for health and safety, and put a paramount on the development of our customer experience”
This is not the first event the company has held this year, that focuses on health and well-being. Early this year Sports Direct took part in the Restart a heart campaign. They offered their expert CPR training to members of the public. Allowing them to take the same course that all managers in the company receive as part of their basic training.

Sports Direct’s E-Commerce team have been working with the final year students from Teesside University on a live client project focusing on the Sports Direct App. The team visited the campus on several occasions to partake in consultancy sessions where the students presented their solutions with the main focus on UI/UX design. Jo Mclaren E-Commerce manager stated “It’s been a great experience for both us and the students, they’ve provided valuable feedback whilst working on ...a live project, which naturally bridges the gap between theory and practice.”
The E-Commerce team were extremely impressed with the standards of work the students presented during the consultancy sessions. Niall Sutherland, Sports Direct’s E-Commerce Director stated “Working with the students on the App was essential to gain insight into what the younger demographic want and highlight areas we will now be focusing on during the next phase of the app.”
On Thursday 14th December; Emily Hilditch, Charlie Wilber and Jo Mclaren announced the winning team, they congratulated Dawn McBeath, Richard Bairstow, Michael Barley, Luke Robinson and Jordan Rundle. The team each received a £100 Sports Direct voucher to reward their hard work and commitment to the project.
The team excelled in delivering above and beyond the initial brief. Myriam Mallet stated that “The students showed a tremendous amount of commitment and were able to demonstrate their skills to the client. This is an example of the kind of work our students can produce and I am sure it will be extremely beneficial for them when they are applying for jobs in the future.”
We would to thank Myriam Mallet and Teesside University for allowing us to work with the students and hope to work together again on future projects.

My sports direct journey

I applied for a job back in 2007 and wasn't lucky enough to get it. The company kept my cv on file and a few weeks later, offered me a job in customer services. I didn't know how to feel about it because it was only a few weeks previously I joked I would never work in customer services, anyway I took the job and 9 years later I'm still here.

After a few years as a adviser, I was promoted to a supervisor. I love my job!

Sports direct is a great Company to work for with so many opportunities and rewards.

You work hard and you're rewarded.

This Company has given me life changing bonuses and let's not forget the annual trips to Newcastle (all expenses paid) which I've been lucky to attend at least 5 times.

I work with so many lovely and helpful people and made loads of friends over the years. One of these is now my best friend and Godmother to my Daughter.

I'm currently on maternity leave and sick to the back teeth of watching our Company being dragged down week after week in the news, it's pathetic.

My Sports Direct adventure began 12 years ago..when I moved from Poland to the UK in 2004 .At that time Sportsdirect’s main depot was in Derbyshire and I was employed through an agency as a warehouse operative. In 2006 Sportsdirect relocated to Shirebrook, along with this move new job opportunities appeared - I was offered a job in the Purchase Ledger department.

Thanks to my Line Manager and support received from Sportsdirect crew I’ve gained excellent excellent skills and knowledge needed to push my career forward – and that's exactly what happened… in 2012 I was promoted to be the Imports Supervisor taking on a team and various responsibilities. I LOVE working for Sports Direct because every day is a different challenge and there are always new opportunities. I have recently been offered the position of European Resale Purchase Ledger Supervisor and I thoroughly enjoy this new challenge and really look forward to many to come…. I don’t know any other company which believes in you and gives you such opportunities when you barely speak English :) But if you work hard and are determined you will be definitely rewarded! #sdfamily

If I read one more review on a website that has a glassdoor and the person says " pay is rubbish" I will hunt the person down and ask for an explanation .

1. Staff are ALL paid above national minimum wage.

2. My staff have shared a pot of money worth £28,727 in the last 12 months on top of there wages any other high street retailer doing this.

3. One of my staff has earned £1,696 in 12 months alone.

"The pays rubbish" comment does make me chuckle.

I started working at sports direct in 2011 in the warehouse at shirebrook, I started with the agency and after 2 years they offered me a contract, which now I am working my way up. I started as a picker and now I am helping run the shifts. Along the way I have met some amazing people who will be lifelong friends. I would like to thank all the managers for giving me the chance to show what I can offer and all the people who have helped me on my way also all the support you gave me through my bad times. #SDFAMILY

I have been with the company for 5 years, started at the age of 16 on a zero hour contract which suited me perfectly as I had college and university commitments. Over the years I have worked at a number of stores including Mansfield St Peters and Salford. I have enjoyed every moment with the company and have made fantastic memories and long term friendships. I have always been supported by management team and appreciated for the work I do. It is so important for people to listen to the staff not the papers.

User

I first started working for the company about four years ago when I just turned 16, I've mainly worked at the Mansfield St. Peter's store over my years with the company however I've also supported with stocktakes and installs at a variety of stores in the area. In my time working for Sportsdirect the media has given the company some bad publicity however in my years working for the company I've never seen this side of the story. Sportsdirect and the team at Mansfield have given me many opportunities to enhance my skill set, and have been very rewarding to me for my hard work by giving me complimentary tickets to go see Wimbledon in 2015 and I've just recently been to watch Newcastle United in a corporate hospitality suite. I've met many great people and friends whilst working for the company and I would also like to thank the management team at Mansfield St. Peter's, Ryan Moulson, Stacey Stubbs and especially the store manager Philip Beardsley for supporting me and helping me enhance my career with the company by pushing me to help me reach my career aspirations. As I will be transferring and joining the Ecommerce team at head office towards the end of this month.

Here's my Sports Direct story...

For over 18 years I have worked in what is my only ever job.

I joined in 1998 as a shy 16 year old in sport&ski Watford, working after school and weekends. I took a year out of studying graphic design to do what I enjoyed and never looked back.

I have worked in different countries and lots of different stores over the years and I'm currently store manager at wembley.

It's so rewarding life changing bonuses, football tickets, tickets to wembley...

I wouldn't change it for the world #SDFamily

Here's my SD story. 10.5 years ago I was dragged to the job centre by my dad to get a job. I turned up for an interview in my Nike full tracksuit and I don't even know what I said but somehow I got a job. I worked at fosse park and on that zero hour contract and £3 an hour back then! I would graft by ass off every shift .. No footwear assistant .. Handtaps .. Radios that were shit and we can all remember those days. I worked hard and got rewarded with full time in 2008. I carried on grafting and putting everything I had into my job and I have worked every position within a store that this company has to offer. In 2012 I went store manager. I had ups .. Great times and dealt with many issues along the way. I hit a bad patch.. But instead of people above me writing me off they didn't. My area manager Chris helped me and guided me through and now I can stand there and say I am the best I have ever been... My staff are the best they have ever been... And the company I work for is the best it's ever been. Big point in that story is who would of gave me a job, when I turned up on the day but someone did. I take 16/17 year old people, i give them that opportunity because someone gave me mine. Yes you may walk in and say "that stupid girl on the till" but they have to start somewhere and what a great place and a great company to start it. Iv been rewarded with a lot of money... I have a career .. I met my fiancée at sports direct .. I have a beautiful little girl... And I have a roof over our heads .. All thanks for sportsdirect. Yes... We are still not perfect.. Not one company out there is. I believe my staff are treated perfectly.. I am treated the same by my superiors. Sportsdirect throws money at good people and good service. My shop store and staff earnings combined last 12 months .. £22k... Find me another retailer that offers that. I couldn't work anywhere else that has my back 100% lots more stuff I could write. Have that press, but good news don't sell.
