I have recently noticed that the flag on The Bargate is changed on a regular basis.

Northam Bridge. The iron version in the photo was built in 1889, and replaced a wooden bridge that had been built in 1799. That wooden bridge had been the first to span the River Itchen. The current version of #Northam Bridge, a concrete structure, was built in 1954. #Southampton Source: Twitter @HistoricalSoton

The East Street frontage of Edwin Jones & Co. Ltd 1930. The department store kept the name Edwin Jones from the 1860s until 1973, when it became part of Debenhams.

Elizabeth Vernon, Countess of Southampton c.1600. One of the Maids of Honour to Elizabeth I, she married the 3rd. Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare's patron, secretly in 1598 when pregnant, severely annoying the Queen, who had them briefly imprisoned.

What a lovely map of Hampshire by Camden in 1607. Southampton nestles next to the water, St Mary's and St Dismas (Denys) are marked. The capital lettering along the west bank of the Itchen says "CLAUSENTUM", the name of the Roman settlement at Bitterne. There appear to be no roads shown, so do the lines and light brown shading show the boundaries of "Greater Southampton" and other areas?
