Four6 is a piece by John Cage for four performers and ‘any way of producing sounds’. In this performance the Space Ensemble makes use of musical instruments and laboratory equipment to create sound.
The time brackets in the musical score indicate when a particular object should be played. John Cage proposed that one should allow the resultant mix of unrelated sounds to abide in a state of co-existence, interpenetration and non-interference.
Based in The Space at Sevenoaks Sch...ool, the Space Ensemble takes music performance to previously unimagined spaces around the school campus. This group programmes exclusively cutting-edge contemporary and experimental music that defies tradition and pushes boundaries. Performing one discipline in the space of another is an affirmation of the school’s interdisciplinary ethos. The rehearsal process aims to involve all students democratically.
In its unique way, the project develops the skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and risk-taking in the students. Each year two music videos are produced and disseminated on social media.
John Cage (1912-1992) is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Active as a composer, performer, visual artist, writer and poet, he pioneered a completely new way of producing music. Fascinated as he was with eastern philosophies, he invited noise and indeterminacy to become part of our listening experience.
