So who's actually responsible for fire safety?
Well in fact everyone is responsible but ultimately you’re responsible for fire safety in your business or other non-domestic premises if you’re:
• an employer... • the owner • the landlord • an occupier • anyone else with control of the premises, for example a facilities manager, building manager, managing agent, or risk assessor

As we head into the colder months, we all want to stay warm but it is especially important to ensure that we also stay safe.
The Responsible Person for fire safety in the workplace such as employers, building owners or occupiers, managing agents, etc. must ensure that a fire risk assessment of the premises is carried out and that it is kept up to date. The risk assessment should be carried out by a suitably competent person who can adequately assess the risk of fire in the ...workplace.
Based on the findings of the assessment, the responsible person will need to ensure that adequate and appropriate fire safety measures are in place to minimise the risk of injury, or loss of life in the event of a fire.
To help prevent fire in the workplace, your risk assessment should identify what could cause a fire to start, i.e. sources of ignition (heat or sparks) and substances that burn, and the people who may be at risk. Once the risks have been identified, you can take appropriate action to control them. Consider whether you can avoid them altogether or, if this is not possible, how you can reduce the risks and manage them.
Also consider how you will protect people if there is a fire: • Keep sources of ignition and flammable substances apart • Avoid accidental fires, e.g. make sure heaters cannot be knocked over • Always ensure good housekeeping, e.g. avoid a build-up of rubbish that could be ignited by others (arson) • Consider how to detect fires and how to warn people quickly if they start, e.g. by installing smoke alarms (in domestic premises), fire detection and alarm systems (in commercial premises) • Have the correct fire-fighting equipment in place for putting a fire out quickly (ensure that all staff receive training in the identification and correct use of fire extinguishers) • Always keep fire exits and escape routes clearly marked and unobstructed • Ensure your workers receive appropriate training on procedures they need to follow, including fire drills • Review and update your risk assessment regularly

How fires start
Fires need three things to start - a source of ignition (heat), a source of fuel (something that burns) and oxygen. The possible sources of ignition include heaters, lighting, naked flames (matches, candles, etc.), electrical equipment, smokers’ materials (cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco) and anything else that can get very hot or cause sparks; Fuel can be solid and include things like wood, paper, plastic, rubber or foam, loose packaging materials, waste rub...bish and furniture. Fuel can also be a flammable liquid such as petrol, solvents, oils or fats. Other sources of fuel include flammable gases and flammable metals; Oxygen is found all around us. It is one of the most important elements on planet Earth. Oxygen makes up around 21% of the Earth's atmosphere and 50% of the mass of the Earth's crust. Oxygen is one of the atoms that makes up water (H2O)

“If it appreciates, buy it. If it depreciates, lease it.”
The outright costs of fire alarm system installation can sometimes make business owners feel reluctant to buy, due to the impact it has on cash flow and the potential requirement to source external funding. These concerns often result in businesses opting for cheaper and less sustainable fire safety equipment.
To assist our customers we now offer the option of leasing your fire alarm installation to eligible clients.
