This is the handsome Angus, who can struggle with over arousal when out on a walk. We went for a training walk and our aim was to keep his arousal level low, this meant we had to work in a quiet area where he has minimal distractions, setting him up to succeed. As you can see he was quick to pick this up. By the end of the session we had reduced the rate of reinforcement. What a clever boy!

It’s been a glorious morning here in the West Country, had a lovely time down at Charmouth beach. First up was a run on the beach for Sookie and Beau with their friend Finnick, followed by a training walk with these two handsome chaps-Rafferty and Malachi.

Scout has been staying with Sookie, Beau and I for the last 12 days. While out walking he was struggling to remember his usually very reliable recall, likely due to the excitement of his friends and someone different walking him. To ensure his safety and allow us to carry out some recall training using high value food rewards, I have had him on a long line for the past few days. As you can see from the pictures below this didn't stop him from having fun. The training has paid off and this morning he was allowed his off lead privileges again and was a star!

I had the pleasure of going for a training walk with these two cuties today. Bubbles finds unfamiliar dogs scary on a walk and can become vocal, Toby finds them far too exciting and can get frustrated when he can’t bound over and say hello.
His owners have been working on focus and loose lead walking at home and we put some of this into place today. Both dogs worked so well and were a testament to their owners. Well done boys!
If you would like some help with your dogs then please feel free to get in touch.

Really interesting article here by Kamal. Was just discussing this issue the other day with a couple of clients, how over arousal can then lead to behaviour problems. Trying to tire your dog out isn’t necessarily the best way to have a well behaved pet.

What a great way to sum up why dominance training is not necessary.

User

Never underestimate the power of desensitising your dog to being handled and to be happy with while you are doing it!!!!
Poor Beau is recovering from a very large open infected wound on his neck and I have been able to manage it at home (I won’t post the pics of the wound as I know some of you may be having lunch).
This means dressing changes every two days and today he stood and allowed me to clean, flush and redress his wound all on my own. He did amazingly well and this i...s a brilliant achievement for this dog as 2 years ago I could barely touch him apart from under his chin and chest. All of this has been built on a foundation of trust and positive reinforcement.
If you need help with handling your dog or are just interested in preparing them for experiences they may have at the vets then do not hesitate to contact me.

So while I spent a large portion of the day doing paperwork Sookie relaxed, snuggled up in a blanket. It's a tough life being a lurcher hey!

I have seen these online a lot recently, so thought I would test them. Well they were a huge success, my two loved licking the peanut butter off them and the grid design meant that it lasted well over an hour for them.
It was also an activity that was fairly static and could be done stood or laid down, so ideal for those dogs who may be on restricted exercise due to injuries or those with arthritis, who are unable to engage in more energetic activities.
