About Sheffield Autistic Society

The Sheffield Autistic Society is a support group for parents and carers who have sons or daughters or look after people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Society was founded by parents and carers in September 1989. The Society became a registered charity in July 1993 and is affiliated with the National Autistic Society (NAS). Its stated objectives are : -
1. to promote and advance the welfare and education of children and adults with autistic spectrum disorders who are resident within the City of Sheffield, and
2. to advance the education of families and carers of people with autistic spectrum disorders, and that of the general public, in the effects of autism
The Society has no premises but operates from the homes of the individual committee members and trustees, who are all unpaid volunteers. There is a voluntary annual membership fee with reduced rates for unwaged, single parents, students, pensioners and those on low incomes.
Mutual support is always available by telephone or e-mail contact. It is also available at monthly meetings at a City centre venue. Support is also given via our regular newsletters and more information is available for members via our comprehensive book and DVD library. The Society also organises a Summer Playscheme each year for children on the Autistic Spectrum aged 8 to 14 years, and their siblings, this Playscheme has been running since 1992.
The monthly meetings are all held at The Sheffield Carers Centre, 7 Bells Square (off Trippet Lane), Sheffield City Centre S12FY. Daytime meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month between 12. 30 and 2. 30. Anyone with an interest in Autism is welcome to attend the monthly meetings
