Spurr back for a third season
The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs are pleased to announce that another key part of our team over the past two seasons has re-signed for a third year.
Forward James Spurr joined the Dogs from Sutton for the start of the 2017/18 season. The 29-year-old started out in the Sheffield juniors before opting to play in Peterborough. After 5 seasons with the Sting he finally came home to become a Steeldog.
... He has been one of the most consistent performers over the past couple of seasons, making significant contributions to our Moralee Conference title and the North Cup victory. There has been plenty of interest in our #14 so we are happy he has chosen to remain at The Pound.
Ben Morgan thinks he another top performer back in the line-up; “Spurrsy is as deserving of compliments as anyone we have had in the squad during my time as coach. With each passing year he’s becoming more an experienced guy, a veteran if you like but his attitude, his application especially last season coming back from that injury was exemplary. He’s an all-round professional, a great guy to have in the changing room and someone I hope the younger guys look up to and aim to emulate the success he’s had with us.
“He doesn’t put too much pressure on himself to go out and score week in, week out and I certainly don’t put pressure on him but he really contributes to line goals and he’s had great chemistry with the guys he’s played with. I could stick him out on the ice with pretty much anyone – if I asked him to play D he could probably do it!
“He gives you different options up front, different variations on the power play and he absolutely works himself to the bone on the penalty kill - he’s fantastic short-handed. He’s a true gentleman on and off the ice and he’s very honest in what he does and how he applies himself. He knows where his capabilities lie and what his strengths are and he just tries to go out and do everything to the very best level. It’s great to have him back for another season.”
James is enjoying a well-deserved break at present, so we’ll hear from him later.
Welcome back James!
A big thank you to Hillsborough Hotel who are going to be player sponsor to James. We thank them for their continued support.
James joins Nathan Salem, Cam Brownley, Lewis Bell, Ben Morgan and Dmitri Zimozdra in our 2019/20 squad. The team keeps on growing with more announcements to come, so keep checking our social media.

Check in with Dima
Last weekend we confirmed that Dmitri Zimozdra was back as the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs starting net minder for the 2019/20 NIHL National Division season.
Dima was enjoying his birthday celebrations at the time but has now shared his thoughts on last season and the forthcoming campaign;... “Looking back at it now, Steeldogs had a great season overall however our main goal was always to win the league again. It’s the hardest challenge to win back to back titles and we were up for the challenge. It was great that it all came down to the last game of the season again to determine the winner where sadly we didn’t get the bounces - that’s how it goes sometimes.
"However, I’m very proud that we’ve managed to add another trophy last year, winning the North Cup over those two exciting games against Telford. It’s great to share these moments with family, friends and fans.
“On a personal level it was a great honour to be recognised by the Steeldogs fans to win the Eileen Dunkley Award. Like I said on the night, I couldn’t have done it without the efforts of the guys on the team.
“Next season will be different with the return to a national league, especially with the new team in Leeds, MK returning and all those other teams who won trophies last year. There should be plenty of entertaining games for the fans and I’m looking forward to being part of that. I expect the Steeldogs will compete on a nightly basis and hopefully give our fans plenty more great nights.”
We will have news on Dima’s next team-mate for the new season next week.

Woody back at The Pound
The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs are delighted to announce that Greg Wood has returned to the club as assistant coach. Head Coach Ben Morgan invited Greg to come back to the club to run the bench at games and support in off-ice work too.
Woody is a former Steeldogs player, Captain and Coach. He brings a wealth of experience and is back having spent most of the past two years away from hockey – apart from a brief playing return to help win the ...Moralee title in the Spring of 2018!
Morgs is pleased to have Woody back on board; “I am sure everyone will agree that the addition of Greg to our coaching staff is only a good thing for the Steeldogs, both for the development of players and the image of the club. I for one am extremely grateful to have him back with us.”
Greg is very happy to be back in the organisation; “I am absolutely delighted to be back with the Steeldogs. I have had a good break and am fully refreshed and full of enthusiasm for the challenges that lie ahead of us. I can’t wait to get started. I am looking forward to supporting Morgs in whatever ways I can and make sure we achieve our objectives.”
As one coach arrives, two depart. We say goodbye to Kevin O’Brien and Neil Jepson who have served on the bench for the past two seasons. They were both part of the title winning set up and of course North Cup winners last season. Thanks to them for their hard work and dedication and good luck with your future sporting ventures.

NIHL DIVISIONAL FORMATS CONFIRMED FOR 19/20 SEASON
The clubs and management of the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) held their annual section meetings this past weekend and agreed the format of competitions for the 2019/20 season starting in September.
A new ten team national division, NIHL National, comes into existence to sit above the long-standing Division 1 and 2 which are both regionalised into North and South.
... Some finer details around exact format of some Cup and Playoff competitions is still to be signed off by some divisions but the details below are confirmed.
NIHL: NATIONAL
NIHL National's ten teams will be split into two conferences for regular season play. Telford Tigers, MK Lightning, Sheffield Steeldogs, Hull Pirates and Leeds Chiefs make up one conference. Swindon Wildcats, Bracknell Bees, Basingstoke Bison, Peterborough Phantoms and Raiders make up the other.
Teams will play their own conference four home and four away, while they face the other conference twice at home and twice away.
At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams from the overall standings will qualify for the playoffs. These will play in two groups of four, one home and one away game, with the groups being 1st-4th-5th-8th and 2nd-3rd-6th-7th. The top two sides from the groups will qualify for the finals weekend in Coventry.
There will also be a National Cup where the first home game for each club against the nine other clubs will count towards the qualifying standings. The top four sides from this table will qualify for cup semi finals. The highest placed qualifier will choose their semi final opponent, with the two remaining sides also matching up. The Cup should have reached at least the semi final stage by the end of the calendar year.
The season will likely begin on September 14/15 and it was confirmed the the NIHL National will continue with the same 'import' rules as last year. Teams can dress two 'imports' with only one being allowed on the ice at any one time.

Happy Birthday Dima – and welcome back!
The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs are excited to announce that birthday boy Dmitri Zimozdra will be the starting net minder for us for the 2019/20 NIHL National League campaign.
Dima is celebrating his 31st birthday today and we are celebrating having our All-Star goalie between the pipes for another season.
... Dima came through the Sheffield academy and was part of our squad during the Steeldogs first season. After five years with Sutton, he returned to us two years ago and back stopped us to our 2018/19 Moralee Conference title and the North Cup last season. He was league MVP in 18/19 and selected as best net minder in the league for both seasons.
For Coach Ben Morgan, this was one of his most important signings; “The starting netminder position was a high priority for me, it was the first position I wanted to get down on paper. I didn’t want to look anywhere else than Dima, so if he wanted the option of playing for another year with us, he was going to have it 100%.
“He was probably the hungriest out of everyone last season, and having missed out on the opportunity to play alongside us in Coventry he was desperate to come back to have another go at it - whether it’s for one year or two years or five years. He is fully focussed on next season and that can only be a good thing for us.
“On the ice he is calm, he never lets things get to him – he is someone who you can rely and depend upon in all situations. He has time and time again got us out of a hole. He has been the man, be it in end to end action or penalty shoot outs that 9 times out 10 has got us on the right side of the scoreline. His playing credentials speak for themselves; everybody knows what he is about, everyone speaks highly about him in the locker room. He is easy going, relaxed…sometimes too relaxed some people might say but that’s just Dima, he’s just a great guy to have around the team.
“When he gets to the rink, he is switched on in ‘game mode’ and that’s what you need from your starting keeper week in, week out. He brings a wealth of experience and it gives you so much confidence when you turn around and you have Dima in the net, and other teams when they face him will know they have to be on their top game.”
Dima is busy celebrating his birthday, so we’ll hear from him soon.
Welcome back and happy birthday Dima! Tasca Tankers will be player sponsors to Dima again this year and we thank them for their continued support.
Dima joins Nathan Salem, Cam Brownley, Lewis Bell and Ben Morgan in our 2019/20 squad. There are more signings coming soon, so keep checking our social media.
Don’t forget – our season tickets are now available. Book now to guarantee you will see EVERY game! Click here http://bit.ly/2ZbLW9E

Volunteers Week Part 1
As it is Volunteers Week, and there are many people who contribute to the club in many ways, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank them.
The first group of people are vital to the running of a game and that is our fantastic group of Off-Ice officials. These are a group of people you may not always see but without them, the games cannot go ahead.
... Their jobs on a match night include timekeepers, announcer, penalty box officials, goal judges and match night co-ordinator. Ann Liptrott co-ordinates this team of officials and makes sure we have every job covered for every game.
So a massive thank you goes out from everyone at the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs to: Ann Liptrott Gill and Steve Pearson Karen Handisides John and Tom Cope Jerry Bell Ian Bellamy John, Sarah and Jonny Liptrott, Mitchell Kempster Tim Gregg, Richard Renzie and Ali Cree
Special mention has to go to Ann’s grandson Harry, who gives the sweets to the ‘naughty players in the penalty box’!
We will see you again for season 2019/20!

Speirs pursues elite ambitions
Duncan Speirs has informed the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs that he will not be returning to The Pound for season 19/20 as he will be signing for an Elite League team. Whilst we would have liked to have him back with us, it’s great to see a player progressing to play in the EIHL.
Duncan had the following to say;... “Thanks to everyone for everything last year. I wouldn’t have been able to make the next step up without you giving me the chance to play for an ex-EPL club and more professional set up. I really appreciate it, it means a lot. I hope you have a great season this year and I wish you all the best.”
Everyone at the club wishes ‘Duncs’ well as he moves on to his next challenge. Good luck #38.
We would also like to thank the S.S.S.S.S. for their sponsorship of Duncan last season.
We will have season ticket and signing news coming out during the next week, so keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and website.

‘Best Brit’ back for a second season
The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs are excited to announce the return of the forward recognised as the team’s Best Brit last season.
Nathan Salem joined the Dogs as a proven competitor having played in Telford, Hull and Peterborough. He proved hit both with fans and teammates with a high energy style that made him a real asset.
... His 21 goals and 35 assists in the league was 3rd amongst Steeldogs and the penalty shots he scored in Telford in the league and against Hull in the North Cup semi-final showed he could deliver when it really mattered.
Steeldogs co-owner Ali Cree has known Nathan since he was junior in Newcastle and was pleased to bring him to Sheffield; “Having seen his development over the years, it was especially pleasing to finally get him in a Dogs jersey.
“He was a very consistent performer on the ice and a great role-model for our younger players. He’s also been a good fit with the group of guys we have in Sheffield, so we are really happy to have him back for a second season and as part of the team as we head in to the NIHL National League.”
Nathan is happy to be putting the #91 jersey on again as a Steeldog; “I really enjoyed my first season playing for the Dogs - it’s a great team. I knew quite a few of the guys before I signed anyway which made it a bit easier when you first go into the dressing room. Returning was a no brainer really, when Morgs asked me to come back I said yeah straight away. I like the direction that Sheffield is going in and I want to be part of that.
“I think next season it’s going to be very tough, with a few new teams joining the league. It’s going to make it more exciting and a chance to play again in an EPL standard league. We are going to have to make sure we turn up every night as it’s going to be a very tough, very tight league and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Welcome back Nathan!
We would like to thank Matrix Frames & Displays Limited who are going to be player sponsor to Nathan again for the 2019/20 season. We expect Nathan will earn plenty of mentions for them on match nights!
Nathan joins Lewis Bell and Ben Morgan in our 2019/20 line-up with more signings coming next week, along with the release of our season ticket package.

Thank you and good luck
With June fast approaching, lots of work is going on to get everything in place for the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs 2019/20 season.
Ben Morgan has been busy speaking to players, looking at options and working on building his team for September.
... Part of his deliberations have identified a number of players who will not be part of 2019/20 squad, namely Andy Hirst, Liam Charnock, Tom Relf, Adrian Palak, Brandon Stones, Jamie Scott, Joe Cross and Aaron Jepson.
Ben had the following to say; “I would like to place on record my thanks to each and every player who unfortunately will not be returning with us next season. The decision to move in a different direction with regards to next season’s roster and look to bring in new bodies has been a very difficult one for myself.
“Each player should be immensely proud of their contributions to lifting two titles in as many years and I for one will not forget the impact they have had on our club. For now, it is farewell but more importantly thank you for everything they have done in making Sheffield Steeldogs the club we have developed in to today. I wish each of the boys the very best of luck for the future and look forward to hopefully seeing them around next season.”
The Steeldogs management would also like to thank each of the players for their service to the club and wish them all the best for their future endeavors.
Ben is still pursuing signings and we will be announcing some names soon, so keep an eye on our website and social media over the coming weeks.
