On World Cancer Day, let's take a moment to remember the brave fighters we've lost and appreciate the doctors, scientists and researchers working tirelessly to find a cure. The World Health Organization (WHO) shares tips for how to reduce your risk, and at #SheffWHO2019 we can explore how to promote these strategies on a large scale to improve the health of our communities and nations.

Interesting read about the fundamental conflicts of interest that can occur between corporations and public health! How can we work to protect and uphold evidence-based research against the influence of these conflicting interests?

Meet Sikananu Amukena, a member of our Sub-Theme Committee: "Non-Communicable diseases are still a major public health concern in Zambia. As a person fully engaged in finding ways to solve this burden, I have decided to engage myself with #SheffWHO2019 as an organizer to learn and generate good health policies. This will be a great platform to discuss the most pressing global health concerns."

Meet Arturo Serratos De Vecchi, a member of our Sub-Theme Committee: “In Mexico as in many countries, health access and quality depend on the economic situation of the people. As a general practitioner and a medical science researcher working at the Mexican national institute of public health, I’ve learned from great health leaders who work each day for the benefit of my country, always concerned about the improvement of the Mexican health system. Although several changes have already been made to overcome this challenge, there is still much to be done and well-prepared leaders are needed to achieve it. #SheffWHO2019 will be a great chance for people to share knowledge, improve skills and create networks to improve health quality around the world.”

Meet Neeve McGinty, a member of our Sub-Theme Committee: "As an International Relations and Politics student undertaking modules in Global Health Security, I’ve learned that health is fundamentally political. I am extremely excited to participate in my first #SheffWHO2019 simulation to learn how policy makers and health experts can come together to make real change, but also learn about the challenges this entails. Cooperation is the key to tackling some of the biggest challenges to health in the 21st century. I look forward to my role on the sub theme committee and learning from my extremely talented fellow #SheffWHO team members!" #globalhealth

Meet Nirmala Prajapati, our Delegate Coordinator: "An important issue that connects people across borders is the strive for providing health for all. Building on my educational background in public health and sustainable development, I became a part of the SheffWHO organization committee. I come from Nepal, a country so small but rich in culture, diversity and natural beauty, yet facing numerous disparities in health. These health disparities drive my desire to work towards improving global health through combined efforts with like-minded individuals. I anticipate #SheffWHO2019 will be a platform to witness the passion of professionals working to achieve better health for all."

Meet Baiju Shah, our Conference Services Officer: "Having witnessed first-hand the role that public health plays on society, what various NGOs and WHO have done for the public in Kenya, it led me to want to contribute to society in a similar way. Having participated at #SHEFFWHO2018 and winning best delegate overall; I wanted to continue my learning at #SHEFFWHO2019 and help others contribute to a meaningful platform where the best ideas are shared, and action can be taken." #globalhealth

Meet Advaith Srivathsa, our Treasurer and Finance Officer. "I took an interest in diplomacy and policy-making very early on. When I saw the slight yet real impact my work and ideas had on people, it became almost addictive. As a promoter of smart ideas to drive change, playing a part in organizing #SheffWHO2019 was a no-brainer for me." #globalhealth

Meet Ruby, a member of our Sub-Theme Committee. "The fundamental beliefs that shaped my interest toward public health is the existing disparity in the health status of people around the world, which is unacceptable. Coming from the land of the highest peak in the world, as glorious as it appears, can be challenging as I have witnessed the suffering people experience simply due to a lack of access to proper health care. The economic burden of disease in a resource constraint c...ountry like Nepal is unimaginable. I believe there are vast innovative health approaches to explore in the field of public health that have the potential to bridge this never-ending gap. SheffWho2019 offers a platform to brainstorm, discuss, explore, and learn broad perspectives of public health while motivating each other to make a change." #Nepal #SheffWHO #publichealth #universityofsheffield

Meet Hareen De Silva, our Inclusions and Public Relations Officer. "Since SheffWHO 2018, so much has changed for me professionally. Helping to organise SheffWHO and being on the dais gave me the confidence to apply to become chair of my faculty for the Royal College of General Practitioners. I am now the youngest chair in the United Kingdom, which is a true privilege as well as a huge responsibility. How does someone represent the views of 1100 general practitioners (GPs) & training GPs of varying views? Diplomacy! Where can you learn diplomacy? At SheffWHO, that’s where! Stop debating whether you should go or not. Just come and debate global health policy in a safe and fun environment in the City of Sanctuary, Sheffield."

Meet Meg Capshew, our Operations Manager. "When people come together to discuss important ideas, important things happen! In the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to organize focus groups of trauma surgeons, young social entrepreneurs, and grassroots leaders focused on well-being. Over the next week we will be introducing you to the SheffWHO team, starting off with our Secretary and Sub-Theme Committee Manager, Kaodi McGaw: “In Jamaica, the indescribable natural beauty and vibrant spirit of its people contrasts greatly with the realities of social inequalities, crime and violence that have existed there for years. I used to think the issue was hopeless, until I started working with a small yet powerful NGO, gaining small successes, seeing solutions tha...t worked, witnessing communities that became violence-free and meeting the people who have selflessly dedicated their lives to the healing of a nation. It all showed me that hope is not lost, and that the answers exist. SheffWHO is the opportunity to engage in the difficult process that is ahead of us as global citizens to translate these solutions into action to make the world a safer, healthier and more just place.”
