Hedgehogs in July by Kay Bullen, Trustee of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society
During July you can expect to see the first of the season’s hoglets coming out of the nest with mum. They will start to come out with her at around 4 weeks of age and continue to do this until they are around 8 weeks of age, after this time they will become independent and disperse.
... There will still be new born hoglets arriving, born perhaps to last years later youngsters or perhaps when a mother loses her litter and starts a second one and later still when an early successful litter is followed by a second one.
Hedgehogs are not territorial although they can have home patches. The females’ home patches will be smaller than the male’s. She just needs enough space and a good food supply to rear her hoglets. The males will wander further in the breeding season so have a larger home patch during this time. Once the breeding season is over they will tend to range over a smaller area, concentrating on building a good fat reserve for their hibernation.
If the weather becomes very hot the ground will dry out and this can make foraging difficult as their natural food may burrow deeper into the leaf litter or retreat underground or under stones and paving slabs. Putting out extra food during these times can help a mother hedgehog feed her hoglets and once they are coming out with her they may visit your feeding station for food. Good quality hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or cat biscuits are suitable things to offer. Don’t forget to put out water for all your wildlife visitors as well, and keep ponds topped up so hedgehogs don’t topple in when looking for a drink.
If you are concerned about a hedgehog it is much better to seek advice sooner rather than later it is better to be safe than sorry.

One of our new hoglet admissions - a bit of a weak bub, but still enough fight in them to try and take a bite out of the plate!
Due to the large quantity of hoglet admissions we have been having over the past few weeks, we are running low on some items. If you would like to help us and the spikey babies then a few of the items listed are on the amazon wishlist, but please shop around in case there is a better deal!
Items we would really appreciate:... - Royal Canin puppy starter mousse - Royal Canin mother and baby cat biscuits (pink/white bag) - a few more pairs of weighing scales (0.01g/0.001g) - some handwash! Eco friendly if possible - E45 daily lotion spray - Miracle nipple mini

As always thank you so much for your generosity, without your donations we wouldn't be able to help these wonderful little beings 🦔

Busy here with hoglet season in full swing! This is Halo, one of 2 female hoglets brought in by separate finders today. She weighs a mighty 100g and loves her biccies! Cherry, the other female, is 125g and also tucked straight into her little biscuits. Both hoglets (touch wood) seem active and bright so fingers crossed will be release ready before we know it 🤞❤

Our lovely boy Yankee is ready to go out and woo the ladies with his now-healed war wound! According to the finders he was found down a 3 meter hole, and amazingly for such a fall he was not badly injured. He had a thick scab along his nose, and his front nails were worn completely down due to him trying to climb out 😣 luckily for Yankee he was found and brought to us - now he is fighting fit at around 900g, with a characterful scar to show for his adventures. Today is his release day! 🥳🦔

Yesterday we were at the Dog Watch Doggie Day spreading awareness about hedgehogs out in the wild and amongst your gardens. We want to say a HUGE thank you to Wrayfield dog agility club who raised £300 pounds for our charity 🦔❤! Also a huge thank you to the Dog Watch event for having us. Sadly we cannot attend every event but if you have an event or talk you are interested in us attending please message swcc@sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk for further enquiries 🦔

The tiniest yawn! 😍 these 3 have been in care since Sunday night and are doing really well with an off site carer. For those of you that bought us the 'miracle nipple' teats on the Amazon Wishlist - these guys love them! 😊

Definitely a few roads we can think of that would benefit from one of these signs!

Another great post by another rescue. Also a HUGE thank you for the incredible response to yesterday's post. We have had 4 infants in today that will all benefit greatly from your generosity ❤🦔

Good afternoon! We are in desperate need of some boxes of 1 ml syringes! We have many uses here at the hospital for them, like for example feeding the hoglets that have been admitted to the hospital and also for giving medication to our sickly patients 🦔.
If you could spare a few boxes of syringes, the hogs would be truly grateful (as would we at the hospital!) The link to our Amazon wishlist is below and anything donated would be amazing and much appreciated. 🦔❤

We are very proud to announce that Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC) raised nearly £50,000 during our last financial year 2018/19.
This now brings our new Conservation Fund to £314,000. All of this money has been donated to helping animals in the wild, from poorly hedgehogs in our own back gardens to tigers in the jungles of Sumatra.
... We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our hardworking trustees, staff and volunteers for making the work we do here in the UK, and supporting projects around the world, possible. To date we have admitted over 4,100 hedgehogs into the SWCC hospital since it opened officially in 2012.
We would also like to thank ... YOU!
Without the support of our visitors and donors we wouldn't be here to help save animals in the wild. So a BIG thank you to everyone ... and here's to saving more wildlife!

A great post by another rescue - many of the hoglets / mums with hoglets are sadly brought in to rescues due to unnecessary human interference. Mum's often abandon and can fatally hurt their young if they get stressed, so if you accidentally uncover a nest try to quickly and quietly recover them, monitor from a distance, and call a rescue if you have questions or concerns ❤
