About Shepreth Wildlife Park

Behind the scene zoo news . . . see it here first!

Shepreth Wildlife Park Description

Shepreth Wildlife Park first started as a private sanctuary in 1979. WillersMill Wild Animal Sanctuary, as it was known, was a refuge for creatures great and small, including rescued foxes, hedgehogs and badgers, alongside many different species of unlicensed exotics. After care and rehabilitation many were released back into the wild, but where this was not possible, they lived out their life at the sanctuary.

Today, Shepreth Wildlife Park still hosts a busy ‘Hedgehog Hospital’ but also participates in national and international breeding programmes for endangered species. It remains as committed as ever to its animals and conservation, and to educating the next generation of conservationists.

Thank you to Mick Child for sharing these superb images with us from his recent visit to the park :)

Great to hear our MP Heidi Allen on Radio 4 this morning discussing Brexit. Heidi visited the park and met with our Director earlier this month, to talk through all the issues which zoos and aquariums could face after March next year 🤔

A big thank you to the amazing guys from @brewin_dolphin for their hard work this week helping our keepers to weed the maned wolf enclosure. We had lots of fun with you all 💪👏

Last day of the #eaza zoo conference hosted by @atticazoo today. 841 zoo and aquarium directors, conservationists, scientists, researchers and welfare experts will be heading back to their collections throughout Europe to continue the amazing work they all do for wildlife.
This presentation slide sums up just a small part of what these inspiring collections do. Without these good zoos and aquariums who would instigate, fund and maintain all these crucial projects to help save wild animals and protect habitats for future generations? 🤔 👏

Akiki is the most handsome little guy. Amazingly, he weighs only 180g, but eats 90g of food a day!

These tortoises know you should always eat your greens!

We visited today for the first time and loved it! The park is small but I really don't think that's a bad thing at all. Still lots of animals to see and it just means you can walk round a couple of times if you wish to. We got up really close to the animals and the discovery centre bit is excellent to look around. There is a really calm atmosphere throughout the park. It was over an hour drive for us but we'll definitely go back!

We visited today for the first time and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. It’s a lovely size for our children (6 & 4) to walk around and not moan it’s too far and they’re tired and we managed to see every animal which was a bonus. It’s also very pushchair friendly so our 9mo was happy to be seeing new things too. The park is impeccably clean and the staff are all very friendly. Our daughter hurt her leg and needed to go to first aid and she couldn’t have been seen to more quickly or in a nicer way than she was which was really appreciated by us all. All in all, a wonderful day out, thank you .

We visited the park today (3 adults and 1 child) for a mini keeper experience. The park and staff were outstanding and we all had a wonderful time. The keeper who took us round, Liz, was fantastic and extremely knowledgeable and made the whole experience unforgettable.

We spent at least 5 hours walking round the park and all the animals looked so well looked after and the enclosures well maintained. A particular favourite was the brilliant bat enclosure, it was so immersive. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible, and the whole experience has ignited a passion in my daughter who cannot wait to revisit and learn more about all the fantastic work this wildlife centre does

User

We came today with our nursery group and I just wanted to say how amazing the staff were. The man who was driving the train saved my little boy from choking I'm so very grateful and wanted to say thank you so much again xxx

User

We (my husband and I and our 6 year old daughters) had a fantastic visit today. We had Tesco days out vouchers that were about to expire and this pushed us to visit again. Great layout, not too big for young ones to walk round. The keepers are all so enthusiastic and their love for the animals and conservation shines through. Plus the outdoor play area is great for the kids to let off a bit of steam after lunch. We took a picnic and if it had been too chilly to sit outside we could have eaten this indoors which is great.

Highlights today were seeing a Wallaby joey pop his head out of his mothers pouch and the fantastic experience in the Discovery Centre where you get to meet some of the animals close up and hold them. Liz, who did this was soooo passionate about the animals. Plus seeing the wolves for the first time as the park was about to close.

User

Visited today even in this heat we still had a fantastic day. The site is so clean and plenty of bins and hand washing areas. Staff are all so polite and when my daughter had an accident and cut her elbow the first aider was so kind and cleaned it all up for her and dressed it. Can’t recommend this place enough

User

Visited here for the first time today with my two nephews. Was a lovely day out! The location is brilliant if you are using the train. They have a good variety of animals which are well looked after, the play areas suit all ages and the catering was reasonably priced! The gift shop was also very reasonably priced, we came away with two very happy little boys carrying an ice cream van which played music to us all the way home. You can see the staff are all very committed to keeping the animals happy in their enclosures too, they were all revamping and sprucing the areas up as you walked around. They try and make their environments as natural as possible! Well worth a visit and I will definitely be going back!

User

This was our first visit with our 2 year old. It’s a perfect place for this age group. Just the right amount of animals. All the animals look well cared for and the staff are very friendly. Plenty of play areas too. Highly recommended and would visit again

User

This was my first visit with my grand children and it was a lovely day out. Everything is set out just right for children and the animals were happy in their surroundings. They were easy to see and all very active. The tiger was beautiful, saw him close to on his bed and then asleep on his platform. The otter family were gorgeous, mummy feeding baby right in front of us. The owl display was very informative and funny. Plenty of clean toilets and picnic tables and seating. All in all well worth a visit or 2 and I highly recommend.

User

My family and I have been coming here for many years now. We love it. Its so close to the station which is fantastic. Wheelchair friendly, my son has mobility issues and was able to enjoy the whole park without any problem. My son loves Lurch (the owl) unfortunatly when we visited yesterday you had to cancel having the outside display which I fully support as you did not want to risk the health of your birds. This shows the commitment to the animals health over showmanship which is how it should be. We were still able to watch a brillant talk on him with one of the keepers within his habiat. I've seen a lot reviews complaining about cost of admission I personally feel the price is fair as it all goes back into running the park and taking care of all the amazing animals. We will be returning a few times a year as we always have. Keep doing what you do

User

Me and my 3yo son visited today and was plesently surprised! All the enclosures looked clean and the animals seemed to have enough space considering and not over crowded. The park is perfect for young children with plenty to see and lots of fun activities for the kids especially when you want to sit down for 5 mins! Will definitely be returning and will definitely recommend to people in the future thank you for a lovely day!

User

Last minute decision for another visit today and not disappointed, we love coming here as it is a short distance for us to travel (40mins) and much better than our local zoo, highlights of today were seeing the red pandas and spending nearly an hour in with the fruit bats, the longer we stood there the closer they flew with one trying to land on my back pack, can't wait for our next visit :) :)

User

Just finished a lovely day out with my parter and Mum. I had a surprise meet the Red Panda experience as a birthday present which was amazing! The stuff of dreams! Your keeper Eve is a fantastic asset to the park - she was wonderful, knowledgable about the animals and she went out of her way to make the experience fantastic for me! Thank you so much!

User

I've visited a few times before and always have a lovely day out, it's a relatively small zoo but with a great collection of animals and a really immersive free-flying bat exhibit. Today we thoroughly enjoyed a capybara experience today feeding and fussing Jinx plus a guest appearance from Murray the mara. Keeper Katie was absolutely lovely and really couldn't do more for us. We bumped in to her many times during the day and she always had the time to stop for a quick chat about whichever animals were nearby. All others keepers we met were just as lovely and took the time to talk and answer any questions we had.....all are an asset to the visitor experience. I'd also like to give a shout out to the lady in the Jungle Barn café, both serving and preparing food for everyone AND bringing over to the table all on her own and with a smile on her face.

User

I was really surprised of how many animals they were especially for a small wildlife park I loved every minute of it I would highly recommend this place for anyone also th staff were very friendly and easy to talk to.

User

Amazing little place perfect for the likes of me who has limited mobility and pain issues not to busy flat ground so can go round at own slow pace

So clean all u see if zoo keepers cleaning and feeding and also so very helpful happy to chat to kids as they work will defo return on a dryer warmer day :)

User

We did have a lovely day out. A good variety of animals and nice play area. Good value for money if you do a group booking and also use the train - that was a nightmare but not the parks fault!

Unfortunately here is very little shade at lunchtime most of picnic tables could’ve done with umbrellas - the tables do have holes for them - it was about 27 degrees ☀️☀️☀️☀️. Also we couldn’t hear the birds of prey lady - no speaker and also not enough seating there - we had to sit on the gravel or pavement .

User

Not over impressed, seems to have gone downhill a bit since our last visit. Main cafeteria shut due to staff shortages. Alternative cafe serving reduced menu due to staff shortages. And the biggest moan was that the train was put away half an hour before it's advertised closing time, leaving a very disappointed two year old Granddaughter

User

First time visiting, it wasn't worth the £24 we paid to get in (2 adults). It was a semi warm day, most of the animals were hidden away in their inside parts. Which is fine, but when you can see the inside sections they were locked e.g. the otter part the door was locked, several people disappointed in this. Considering how much we paid to get in , there wasn't alot of animals. Ive been to smaller zoos which were more enjoyable. It seems like its aimed more at small kids with all the play areas. Even the bunny walk section was a let down, there was maybe 5 rabbits in total? Overall i'm not going to come back, and i wouldnt suggest it to anyone else.
