This afternoon Gary and I said our final farewells to 'Big Steve'.
Such a gentle giant who first come into our lives with the removal of the condemned coastguard tower in 2012. From that moment Steve and his family became Fort Family.
Steve's last journey was on the back of a green Edburton truck and, what must have been nearly 200 people, were at the crematorium to meet him.
... Such a beautiful and personal send off, with music chosen by Tracie, Alex, Joey, Joanie and Charlie which made us both laugh and cry.
We'll miss you Steve but you'll always be with us at Shoreham Fort and you'll be fondly remembered each time we use the HUGE brush that you 'acquired' for us.
We truly 'are hoping that you knew all along how much you meant to us.'

April Fools! We didn't find any roman coins last week. It is impossible to find anything that old as the land where the Fort is, wasn't there a few hundred years ago.
We would also like to point out that any metal detecting and unauthorised digging at the Fort is illegal.

We couldn't share this last week as we were waiting on confirmation by the 'Finds Office Of London', but we dug up a bag of coins that date from Roman times at the fort! It's possibly one of the most significant finds in the local area.
How amazing is that?!?

It’s with a huge smile on our faces that we can now announce that we have been successful in our first ever National Lottery Heritage Fund bid for our WWI Memorial Training Trench. This funding can now be added to the Pot of Gold money that we received from Adur District Council.
This project has been in the planning for a number of years and a lot of work has been going on in the background, as you can imagine.
The HLF bid was made possible by the support of a huge group of... people including Creative Waves Community Arts, Trevor Povey, Emma at the Marlipins, Shoreham Port and of course our fabulous volunteers.
This is going to be an amazing project for the community to get involved with and such an amazing educational aid for the schools - it will be one of its kind in the area.
We can’t wait to get started so watch this space for more updates as we get them.

Thanks to Sarah B we have had a very generous sponsorship from Bardeli Supplies Ltd for our tea hut, which will benefit everyone from today.
It's support like this from local businesses which makes a huge difference to our project and we really cannot thank them enough.
Also new and exciting from today, we have Dunkirk 1940, who are based at Fort Luton, joining us to install new display panels in our Nissen hut - we can't wait.
... Why not come down and say hi to us volunteers and see what we're up to? We're on site between 11:00~16:00 and you can have a cuppa, join the tour at 14:00 and then maybe you'll get a sneaky peek at the new display too.
See you there.

What an absolutely amazing evening...
Thank you to everyone who attended our first ever quiz to make it the huge success it was.
I think everyone will agree that Sarah Brierley did us proud with organising the quiz and setting the questions and that Jon and Sofe from BlueDawg Entertainments did us proud with the interval games. I also think it's fair to say that Liz H makes the most AMAZING cakes, Julie B makes the greatest egg cozy soldiers and Gary B isn't three bad as a q...uiz master 😉
Thank you all for your generosity last night, especially those who donated their winnings back to the fort - that really was so unexpected!
So without any further waffling from me....
Drum roll please...
This morning we will be banking an incredible £549.66.
Just wow...

PS - thank you Sarah for spotting my typo 😳 whoops...

What a wonderful day we had with our grandsons today who are into everything army, camouflage guns and rifles. The whole open day and re-enactment was fantastic. It was interactive, everyone was so friendly, and it was hands on and fun!Our 5 year old boys got so much out of today. Thank you very much! We loved it!

User

This is an amazing place! We have just spent the weekend sharing the Military History Weekend with the volunteers, other exhibitors and visitors and had a great time Steve and I would like to say a huge thank you to all the dedicated people who are working so very hard to rescue and promote a valuable part of our heritage. We are looking forward to returning in the future. Well done to the volunteers and supporters

This *was* an unloved, deteriorating, relic, which few knew what it was built for. Then this community group began to revive it, preserve it, renovate it, and included info boards, safety barriers, cafe hut... And reenactment groups! I live in Milton Keynes, 150+ miles from Shoreham, but I love to visit, at least once a year. Children can scramble and climb all over the walls and mounds. Mum & dad can sit & enjoy the ships & dredgers coming & going into Shoreham Port. An ideal half-day / day out!

User

The group of volunteers do an amazing job in keeping the fort going, however they deserve a lottery grant as they have plans to rebuild the fort. It has history that needs to stay alive. Visit them and Support them. Good mugs of tea and coffee with amazing views.

User

Thank you for such a great day. I highly recommend a visit and taking advantage of joining a tour. It was very interactive and we all learnt so much. The volunteers are amazing

User

Sharon, Gary and the others are a big credit to this tiny/ cute little fort. They put their blood sweat and tears into this place and bring it to life. A big part of Shoreham's History and well worth a visit :-)

User

Myself and my daughter really enjoyed the Military History weekend. We came on the Sunday and it was a great setup with some great reenactments using the weapons and cannons.

User

Loved the Military weekend, great way to bring people together while supporting all the work that has being going on with the restoration.

User

Interesting and didn’t know it existed after living in Worthing for first 26 years of my life- definitely worth a visit

User

Had the best night there with the team, Sharron and Gary were fantastic hosts, few spooky unexpected events but really worth going to experience the history.

Thank you so much for being such amazing hosts.

User

Had a great day in Shoreham. The Fort is coming to life as the volunteers dig it out. The tour was well done and very informative. He even kept the interest of the children. The surprise at the end of the tunnel is incredible. Well worth a visit. Thankyou

User

Had a great but chilly afternoon at Shoreham Fort yesterday. Information given by the guide about its history was well delivered and very interesting. Fingers crossed that the dream of full restoration can happen as it would be something Shoreham can be very proud of. Well done to all the volunteers who have got it to this stage.

User

Fab day out with some great demonstrations and a lovely cake stall 🍰🎂 run some equally lovely ladies! 👯☺️👍🏻

User

Don't just look at it and think there is nothing here, do the tour, it's far a more interesting place than it first appears.

Do the tour.

Well recommend.

User

Brilliant afternoon!! Tour was very Informative, We all really enjoyed it. Really hope they get the funding they need it will really benefit not just the local community but surrounding areas as well. Keep up the good work its a real hidden little gem!!

User

A historical and atmospheric gem that captures the imagination of kids and adults alike. Kids can scramble over grassy banks and brick walls without being wrapped in cotton wool and watch the ships sailing in to dock.

User

A fantastic afternoon learning the history of Shoreham Fort, which I remember as a child being covered in shingle. Amazing to see how much restoration has been done so far, through the sheer hard work of Gary and the team of volunteers, and the incredible plans for the future. This will be such an asset to Shoreham. Our son was captivated and we are grateful to the team, especially Sharon and Gary, for accommodating him in his wheelchair and enabling him to experience everything as best as possible. We learnt so much from Gary. Thank you for a brilliant afternoon!

User

A great place to visit for families or individuals away from main roads with access to public toilets and a shack to buy refreshments available every other Sunday orcs great for kids to run around or for a gentle stroll apprepiating this unique peace of history

User

I must say having never been to Shoreham Fort before, i wasn't sure what to expect. Reading the 'overview' on the website, was very useful in helping me understand the site and it's usage. For me a photographer and very photogenic site, really enjoyed my visit. Vince
