Shotgun Theatre Description

At Shotgun Theatre, we strive to create innovative and boundary-breaking musical theatre. We are committed to providing opportunities in all aspects of theatre for our members to push creative and personal boundaries, producing work with the potential to excel in, and go beyond, the student theatre scene.

We hold a 10-year history of producing prestigious shows to excellent reviews, presenting multiple full-scale shows throughout the year. We pride ourselves on our inclusive ethos, opening our choice of shows to a members’ vote twice a year - we want to create work that YOU want to see and take part in.

Shotgun are also committed to our society’s social aspect, offering social memberships and hosting events for theatre-lovers throughout the year, such as our bi-termly Open Mic Cabaret Evenings. Whether you are a seasoned MT veteran or are yet to sing your first showtune, anyone is welcome to sing their hearts out or simply enjoy a night of great music and infectious vibes!

ELEGIES FOR ANGELS, PUNKS AND RAGING QUEENS
Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens is a song cycle inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt – a memorial quilt made to celebrate those who have lost their lives due to AIDS related causes – and Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. Each monologue is written from the perspective of characters who have died from AIDS and the songs represent the feeling of friends and family members dealing with the loss. The shows reminds us that the HIV epidemic is about millions of individuals and not an unnamed and stigmatized group.
This versatile and adaptable piece features a gender blind cast and a flexible cast size. As our Term 1 show, it would fall at the beginning of AIDS awareness month in December, giving this show the potential to have an active place in our wider society.

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
A musical that has everything - humour, charm, vibrant music and even audience participation! In the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six teens compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime, all hoping to achieve one thing: avoiding the infamous 'ding' of the bell that signifies a spelling mistake. Complete with flashbacks and stories from their home lives to add to the comedy, the six adolescents spell their way through (sometimes) made up words until the winner is crowned: six spellers enter, and only one leaves!

TERM 1 SHORTLISTED SHOW INFO
Can’t decide which of our shortlisted shows to vote for? Read a little more about each show, and remember to place your vote by Friday May 24th @ 7pm!
LOSERVILLE
... ‘Loserville’ is a fun, energetic and dorky musical. Set in 1971 and based around a group of young people who want to change the course of history, technology, fashion and dating… but not necessarily in that order. The soundtrack has been described as ‘the most memorable since Avenue Q’, and it hosts a range of exciting and fresh characters, plots and songs.
This show boasts a large split-gender cast, and presents opportunities for lots of different vocal abilities. It is your classic high school story, but from the perspective of the underdogs, the geeks who are underestimated, and teaches the virtue of not judging a book by its cover.
