A great weekend at the @WW open canoe group lakes meet. Over 20 OC’s on the water both days enjoying nice levels on the rivers Leven and Kent.

Having a great time at the Welsh Open Canoe Symposium now the rain has stopped, with plenty of different workshops happening.

If you were a canoe manufacturer, which of the following principles would you prioritise?
1. Minimise product weight 2. Minimise product cost 3. Minimise a product's impact on the planet
... Obviously number three is a hot topic right now, but increasingly we are seeing people campaigning and sharing various media on environmental issues with one breath, then demanding cheaper or lighter product with the next.
Often reducing cost means using lower grade materials, with a massively reduced product life and/or heavier weight construction - and in a product where close to 80% of it's footprint occurs through manufacture and distribution, this definitely has a negative environmental impact...
Often, producing lighter boats has the same effect as using lower grade materials - it shortens the product's life span (that is unless you use some very advanced materials & techniques, for the purpose of this debate we are talking about lighter variants using the same materials)
So which is it, what's REALLY the most important of the above three to you?

Whitewater Canoeists – what’s really important to you?
At Silverbirch we have always strived to make the most durable boat shells possible. We have a minimum impact level, minimum abrasion rating, and minimum stiffness level that we work to, and these have always stood us in good sted.
Coming from a background in composite boats, both James and Steve would also be more than prepared to trade a little weight for added stiffness, as a flexible hull will do more to degrade a boa...ts performance than a small weight saving will ever give you as an advantage.
However………… we have sat back and watched the market very closely over the past few seasons, the key things paddlers are finding important when purchasing new boats is changing, and a continued trend seems to be weight saving – with many paddlers being openly happy to trade a little durability in their canoe, for the permanent benefit of a lighter boat to carry to the water.
So………..
+ should we consider creating a lightweight polyethylene canoe? + Would you be prepared to sacrifice an amount of durability to achieve this? + What about composite? Would you be willing to paddle a composite river runner? + what about new technology? would, for example, you be prepared to spend 25% more on your WW canoe if that canoe was 30%-40% lighter, whilst also having the same stiffness, and double the impact resistance? + anything else you think we should be doing?
