About Sleepy Elephant Country Walking And Books

Sleepy Elephant Country Walking and Books is a little shop with a BIG AMBITION! We want to keep everyone warm, dry and safe in the hills.

Sleepy Elephant Country Walking And Books Description

Sleepy Elephant, weird name for a shop! Wainwright the guide book guru called the Howgill Fells squatting elephants, seemed like a good idea for a quirky name but squatting didn't have quite the right 'image', so our elephant became SLEEPY. The shop is a specialist walking boot outlet selling main brands cheaper because we buy obsolete styles. These are boots which are perfect but are no longer made so we can buy and sell them cheaper. On average our prices are about one third to half the full recommended retail price of that style, so a great bargain for you. We also try to stock or source small and large sizes down to ladies size 3 and sometimes up to mens size 14.
In addition to footwear we also have a small selection of outdoor clothing which is often discounted.

This is the waterfall just about 400yds from my front door. Its called the Devil's Mustard Pot Stenkrith Park is where the River Eden drops into a gorge known as Coopkarnel/Coop Kernan Hole (or the Devil's Mustard Pot). The deep gorge carved by the River Eden and the strange circular holes, hollowed out by pebbles have been swirled around by the River for centuries. Stories have long been told of how Stenkrith catered for the Devil's hot taste and served as his mustard mill!

This is the Cautley valley there is a long thin waterfall right in the middle of the picture. This is one morning on the way to work this week.

Hi everyone, Sleepy Elephant wishes you a Very Happy Christmas from Sedbergh. This snap is taken from Winder Drive looking over Back Lane playing field and Sleepy is just behind the tree on the left. Unfortunately this is not this year, its raining and very dull and miserable here at present. best wishes Carole

-5 degrees here this morning! Hey it's looking as though we might get a whitish Christmas. The picture is Langston Fell car park on the Garsdale Road which has these extremely picturesque POTHOLES! In the summer it often has equally pretty shetland ponies. Anyway don't forget Sleepy has lots of stuff top keep you warm and cosy.

Small Business Saturday - Small TOWNS are filling up with new businesses because rent, rates and wages are very cheap so there's not too much risk. People will travel for a service or a shop that offers something MORE. Sedbergh is full for the first time in 20 years and Kirkby Stephen has 4 new businesses due to start-up in the new year. A great success story for our rural paradise.

Unbelievably warm and fine still! So Sleepy is having a pre-Christmas January sale, if that makes any sense. Lots of jackets, fleeces and waterproofs at 25% off or more.

Just arrived in the shop Brasher Supalite Active GTX ladies boots. Just about the lightest and most flexible boots available, sizes 4 - 7 inc. half sizes. Price Now £89.95 reduced from £130.
Its a disaster! Brasher are disappearing! Berghaus who own the brand have decided to give it up and so some of the most comfortable boots and shoes are completely going; such a shame a really British fit which suits most of us older walkers. Buy now while you have the chance. Three customers of Sleepy have bought 2 pairs each this week!
