On Monday night, I attended an event called Manchester Soup at the Chamber of Commerce on Deansgate. There were 25-30 small business owners, freelancers and entrepreneurs present, as well as Manchester's new mayor, Andy Burnham. We heard three pitches from charities/social projects doing incredible work in the community and the one with the most votes won the money raised by attendees, including £5 per person donated towards soup that was served at the event. The winner was t...he amazing MASH charity, which was awarded the £515 raised. I caught up with a friend afterwards and got back at midnight to find 22 people had been killed as I was walking home. There was Andy Burnham issuing a statement, who I had been sitting alongside just hours before - it all felt very surreal. There is still a feeling of shock and disbelief here - the city is heartbroken. At Manchester Soup, it was apparent that Manchester cares about the marginalised, the forgotten and the vulnerable and at times like this we come together to work through a bad situation. There is great good in the world, we just need to remember that, as hard as it is right now. Here is a picture of the event I was at just before the incident - people being supportive, industrious and caring for the city they love. This is the image I would like to endure as we start to recover. Long live Manchester. 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝
