Are you wondering who Hans Sloane is /was? Don’t worry you are not alone! Very little was written about him at the time, so he isn’t as well known as we believe he should be!

Hans Sloane was a remarkable and talented man who lived from 1660 till 1753. He was born in Ireland but moved to London to study medicine, botany and pharmacy. He became a member of the Royal Society and a fellow of the college of physicians. He was also a passionate collector of objects of natural history, curiosities, books, manuscripts, plants amongst other things and travelled widely to find items to add to his collection. He was physician to 3 sovereigns and became the president of the Royal College of Physicians and provided the grounds for the Chelsea Physics Garden. However, although he moved in elite circles, he was a man of the people and would open up his collections for them to view for no charge; this was very much in contrast to the norm of the day. On his death he bequeathed his extensive collection to the nation, which led to the creation of the British Museum and later a significant proportion of the items became the foundation of the Natural History Museum.

What has all of this got to do with Chocolate you ask? Well Hans visited Jamaica in 1687 where he first encountered cocoa, which the locals mixed with water. He thought it tasted nauseating but had the inspiration to mix it with milk, thus creating Drinking Chocolate as we know it today! We thank you Sir Hans Sloane!

We want his legacy to be celebrated so we have taken inspiration from this great man in creating a range of Drinking Chocolates we think he would be proud of! In the way that Hans was an innovator of his time, who challenged the norm of the day we have created pure chocolate beads (not powder or flakes like everyone else) as we believe these beautiful beads melt perfectly with water or milk to create a truly indulgent Drinking Chocolate! We’ve also followed in his footsteps by travelling the world for inspirational flavours and to source the best ingredients from different regions of the world for our Drinking Chocolate. Our range currently includes Ecuador 70% , Madagascar 67% , Grenada 60% , Rich Dark, Smooth Milk and Natural, but we are always looking for the next exciting flavour!
