We have been so busy this week. Maternal mental health week spent working in many ways around this. Beginning with recording an interview for RockFM Events with Roshni-2 Project on Wednesday as part of this. Another event in Nelson too. We’ve supported expectant parents through worries. With counselling support for others, who may be years past pregnancy. Supporting others with more complex needs. Often beginning from their own childhood.
So how do we find a balance? Can we ...find a balance? “Release that which does not serve” is a bit of a mantra of mine. If it causes me unhealthy stress, let it go. Easier said that done sometimes.

This week is Maternal Mental Health week. (Perinatal mental illness can affect men too)
Our work at Snowdrop aims to prevent and ease mental illness within families. Our #Doula work is proving to do this. Our #Counsellors also help.
One of the thing that is prevalent within mental illness is parents feeling like they won’t be believed or it will be dismissed. “Pull yourself together” comments do not help.... Or that the stigma attached will be too much and that they have failed. Having a mental illness does not mean that you have failed. If someone is telling you they are feeling low, they are crying, they appear to have no emotions, withdrawn, low appetite, much bigger appetite, sleep pattern disturbance (more than normal baby lack of sleep). Then believe them. Trust that it will have taken a lot of strength to ask for help.
It’s no coincidence that our symbol is Snowdrops. They are the first flower to bloom after the harsh winter season. Sometimes blooming through the frost and snow. Hardy little flowers. Parenting can often be like the little snowdrop. And also, our founder started Snowdrop Doula CIC from her own personal experience with postnatal depression/anxiety. #pregnancy #pnmh #maternalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealthweek #mmhw

Thank you Michelle for excellent antenatal and postnatal support. I attended hypnobirthing classes, reflexology, pregnancy yoga and hired a birth pool from Snowdrop. I had a fantastic natural drug free home birth, welcoming my first child to the world. :-)
