About Soas Jewish Society

SOAS Jewish Society is the home of Judaism at School of Oriental and African Studies. Everyone is welcome to join us regardless of background!

Soas Jewish Society Description

The J-Soc of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) shares Jewish culture, religion and values through the celebration of chaggim and Shabbat, as well as, through the organization of cultural events and regular meetings. The SOAS J-Soc also provides assistance to Jewish students and recognizes its responsibility in preventing antisemitism on campus.

The SOAS J-Soc regularly hosts events such as Friday night dinners on campus, movie screening, talks, discussions, and organizes study groups and excursions to Jewish events around London.

Campus Notes:

The main SOAS campus at Russell Square is placed centrally in the Bloomsbury area of London. There is always something going on: an event, a film screening, a talk, a music performance, or a party. You will never run out of interesting things to do at SOAS!

Kosher Food & Accommodation:

There are kosher sandwiches available in the SOAS Student Union Shop, and there is always a vegetarian and fish option available on campus. The nearest kosher accommodation is at the residential Hillel House in Golders Green.

Local Synagogue Information:

Central Synagogue (Orthodox) - http://www. centralsynagogue.org. uk /
New London Synagogue (Masorti) - http://www. newlondon.org. uk /
West Central Liberal Synagogue (Liberal) - http://www. wcls.org. uk /

Final Notes:

The SOAS J-Soc is a small but very important society at SOAS, providing the often unheard Jewish voice in a wide range of issues on campus. Please email us with any queries you might have and subscribe to our regular emails with information on Jewish events on and off-campus.

"we are writing this letter in response to Liron Velleman’s article ‘The Death of Israel Apartheid Week on UK Campuses’. As campus activists who have dealt with anti-Israel and antisemitic incidents, protests, and events ourselves, we are angered by the constant narrative of endless support that UJS has supposedly provided us with. Although we believe that a central organisation which formally represents Jewish students is vital for social unity and support, we cannot pretend that UJS have represented us appropriately or efficiently in any capacity."
