South Caucasus is the region located between Russia, Turkey and Iran. After the collapse of the Soviet Union three countries in this region – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia – proclaimed their independence. At that time, all of them shared a significant number of similarities: highly centralised government, lack of democratic institutions and a weak respect for the rule of law. Almost 30 years after the collapse these countries have followed different paths of post-communist ...transition and are standing at very different sides of the political straight today: Georgia being a pro-democratic and West-oriented country; Armenia having recently undergone a very unexpected change of the government; and Azerbaijan still holding as a strong authoritarian regime. We are looking to invite students interested in South Caucasus region to join the discussion on democracy and the rule of law in South Caucasus, with the speakers from respective countries.
Moderator: Jurate Guzeviciute, Programme Lawyer at the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute
Speakers: - Lala Darchinova (Lawyer from Azerbaijan) - Nako Edisherashvili (Speaker from Georgia) - Speaker from Armenia
THE EVENT IS FREE AND IS OPEN TO EVERYONE.
