Bridgwater and Taunton Canal Open Pairs Championship Sunday 24th March - 46 pegs
Bright conditions and an increasing cold wind took the edge off the recent form of this prolific venue. Coping best on this difficult day were Taunton's Steve Priddle and Chris Parr.... The potty-mouthed duo trounced a class field amassing a total of 11kg 070g taking full advantage of their favourable draw. Steve drew end peg 48 outside the Boat&Anchor pub supplying the majority of the winning weight with 6kg 475g comprising 1 Tench and some big Perch on worms, Roach and Rudd to caster. Chris drew the much coveted Wide Waters winkling out 2 Tench and a few Perch on pole-fished worm.
Finishing a distant second were Team Thyers ancient stalwarts Mark 'Bunt' Bromsgrove and Brian Slipper putting their near 3 centuries of match angling experience to good use. Brian locating quality in the shape of 2 Tench on worms from a peg by the Boat & Anchor pub while Mark grafted for the best small fish net of the day accumulating 250 Rudd on his favourite split-cane whip with bread and pinkies.
Dan Baldwin ,also known as Mr Wires due to his almost magnetic attraction to over-head cables and the quality pegs that lie either side, took full advantage to breech 4kg with a cracking Perch plus loadsa Rudd. His partner Ian Burton supplied a steady 2kg plus of small Rudd elevating them to a clear 3rd place with 6kg 350g.
Langport Likely Lads Dickie Bull and Dean Stacey squeezed in to 4th by a wafer thin 10g margin ,Dickie supplying the Lions share with 3 Tench on Worms from the bend above the pub. Dean compiled a small fish net on bread and squatts pegged below the bottleneck.
Last in the frame were Taunton's Andy Forward and Shane Portlock ,Andy landing 4 Tench in his 5kg 585g bag, Shane doing just enough to ease them in to 5th, catching small fish from a less favourable area below the bottle neck.
Big THANKS to Rex for creating thoroughly comfortable pegs ,Simon Garbutt and Chris Parr for their help at the draw and the staff at the Boat&Anchor for a nice brekky.

A big THANK YOU to all who shared the footage of our(daylight) robbery.Along with the 'beyond duty' efforts of Somerset Angling staff it has resulted in a partially satisfactory resolution of this criminal episode.
Given all the bad press Facebook has endured recently it is heartwarming that its power can be utilised combating crime in this way.

Done a little recce for the forthcoming Bridgwater Canal Pairs Championship on the Boat & Anchor stretch. Fished a swim about 1/2way twix pub and Widewaters, just below farbank gate.I was Hoping to catch Tench but a carpet of Rudd impeded my efforts, the photo below shows the result.

At the end of last year we had a big re do of the shop with a new display area for barrows, clothing and bedchairs along with a new 5m Fox stand! Well we've continued with the shop do over with a new Matrix stand! Last couple years Matrix have really come onto the market with some fantastic products and new poles which are now displayed on a bigger and tidier stand!

BRIDGWATER/TAUNTON CANAL OPEN PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. MARCH 24TH, Boat & Anchor-Wide Waters-Smithies. Draw 9.15. Fish 11-4. Draw Venue: TBA Entry £20-a-pair +optional pairs and individual pools.
... Hot on the heels of the successful KSD pairs, the opportunity to compete on the rarely-match-fished Bridgwater/Taunton Canal.
I've scoured the archives for recent match action on this stretch revealing an amazing result from December 2013: Pawlett Legion XMAS match won with 86LB OF TENCH!! Admittedly, backing weights were a derisory 40lb, but who remembers second place!
Book in at the shop on 01278 431777 leaving a contact mobile number for confirmation and further info on draw venue.

Rob Dodd took a step up from his usual club matches to top a field of seasoned pro's in the King Sedgemoor Drain Open pairs competition last weekend. On a low but coloured river Rob amassed 10kg 720g(23lb 10oz) from a fancied peg behind the EA depot at Bradney. Catching Rudd well over a pound plus lots of smaller samples of Roach, Rudd ,Skimmers and Perch wielding his trusty 6m whip with maggot and caster hook baits.
The winning pair included 2nd placed individual in the form... of Scandinavian match ace Simon Garbütt with 8kg 085g(17lb 13oz) from the same area as the winner, and Tauntons' very own Tom 'Cruise' Mangnall completing mission impossible from the middle of Parchey straight snaring a 4lb+ Tench in his section 2nd bag weighing 6kg 245g(13lb 12oz). Robs' old man Phil(Dodd) let the boy take the strain whilst nonchalantly doing just enough for the pairing to squeeze in to 2nd place by 2oz from Bridgwaters' only gym bunnies Tony Goodland and Paul Purchase.

Had a cracking days' Roach fishing on the King Sedgemoor Drain today. Nige Bartlett and myself ventured 7 or 8 pegs downstream of Parchey bridge for a pre-pairs(see previous post) recce.
It was a very slow start but once the fish found us it was a bite a chuck, size increasing as the session went on with both of us netting well over double figures.
... Most of the action was recorded on 6m whips using maggot and caster hookbaits...Happy days!
