Following a child’s lead is an important interaction strategy to adopt as it can be helpful in supporting a toddler’s ability to learn new words and develop their understanding of the world around them.

Tip of the day: When toddlers are learning to talk try to ‘Give, Don’t Quiz’ ; up the comments and reduce the questions 👍

When talking about the stages of communication development we often compare it to the growth of a tree 🌳

Saturday’s TOP COMMUNICATION TIP:
When a toddler is learning their first words he/she may use combinations of sounds which don’t quite resemble a real word yet, try INTERPRETING their sounds/grunts & think about what they might be trying to tell you or want to say in that situation if they could say it clearly to you. MODEL the real word back to them to help build their vocabulary. It is useful to follow what your little one is looking at or pointing at to help you decide what words to model back 😀

Another great little blogpost about how more commenting than questions is helpful when toddlers are first learning to talk and how thinking about a child’s reason for communicating (whether it be by pointing, gesturing or making a sound) helps us consider what they might want to say in that situation if they had the words, and decide what words we model to them in response to their attempts to communicate with us.
It is what turns that moment into a magical moment!

PEEKABOO: One of the first and one of the best games little ones learn to play...it requires no toys, just you and your child and teaches so many wonderful early communication skills 🙈🙉
