I finished my MA in 2009, I have been trying to get a job in my field of expertise and since them I have just been offered internships and most of them unpaid; what by the way is illegal. I have tried to get a job in Sotheby's and in other auction houses and I had no help from the careers department. If everyone can have the opportunity of doing an MA, why not everyone can also work in an auction house? This is completely unfair. I have studied History of Art during 6 years in two different universities and I am fluent in three other languages apart from English. I also would like to say that I noted a discriminatory treat in the way some of the teachers and also some of the students treated to some people, what I did not like at all, and sometimes the atmosphere was unfriendly and very tense; is understandable that there is competition but I supposed people studying there were going to have education. One student spent her whole afternoon sitting in front of someone’s presentation laughing at it to try to ruin it; this is the most miserable thing I have ever seen in my life and makes no sense. Only a person with such an empty life will spend a day doing that.
I would not have mind to have passed through all that if I could have got a job by this time, but since 2010 and until today; end of 2013 – that is, in three years time- I have got no job in the field in which I am an expert. I have made such a huge effort to be able of doing the MA; both economically and physically; I worked part time in a gallery while doing my MA. But I have done this effort because I like art. I have got plenty of work experience since I finished the MA. Most expensive Sotheby's sales have been thanks to Picasso’s work which research material is mainly in my mother tongue and I have of course more than enough knowledge about his work to be an expert in an auction house. What is Sotheby’s waiting for to give me a job??!!

As an alumni, perhaps I am biased, perhaps I have the "insider" views. But really enjoyed my time at the Institute on the semester course of "Art and Business". Appreciated the industry leaders coming in to give us lectures, and the international mix of my course-mates was not just inspiring but also a great learning experience of the art scenes happening globally, and the varying perspectives they bring.
