Soton Swap

About Soton Swap

Soton Swap is an upcoming online secondhand bookstore affiliated with the University of Southampton Student's Union. We provide an easy and convenient means by which students can buy and sell secondhand textbooks.

Soton Swap Description

Soton Swap is a brand new online secondhand bookstore coming to the University of Southampton this September. We aim to offer all students an easy and simple way to sell their old textbooks and buy new ones. This means everybody will have a better selection of cheaper books to buy, and also, when selling, no longer needing to rely on Facebook or competing with sellers on Amazon /eBay. Winners all round!

How to use us?

Our online platform is available at www. sotonswap.com. Through the site you can browse and purchase stock allowing you to pay safely and conveniently through the PayPal system. Each week there will be set dates where all orders can be collected from right on campus making the service as convenient as possible and avoiding the hefty costs of postage. This physical contact with our clients also allows us to ensure you are happy with the condition of the book and it matches your expectations.

If you wish to sell your book, please bring it along to our advertised drop off locations where we will collect them, give you a receipt for the item and confirm the price you wish to sell the item for. We will then upload the book onto the website for other users to see and when it has been purchased you will receive email confirmation of sale and then transfer your money to you. If at any time you wish to have your book confirmed to you you can email us and we will happily return it.

Why use us?

Firstly, we are working in conjunction with Enactus who do a lot of important work helping to improve conditions and opportunities for people both in the UK and abroad. In order to continue doing this, Enactus has to generate enough money to cover the costs of these social projects. In accordance with this, all profits made from the book sales will be given to the social projects so you can receive a great price and make a charitable contribution.

As there is only a weekly collection point, there are no hefty shipping fees bringing down the cost for both the buyer and the seller.

A further point is that as we are buying books from current and past students you can be sure the textbooks we advertise are well suited to the modules offered within the university and will usually be on the recommended reading lists. This ensures you are buying the most appropriate text for your course.

CALLING ALL SOTON SWAP SELLERS WHO HAVE GIVEN US BOOKS TO STORE FOR THEM.
Dear Soton Swap Sellers,
Due to the success of Soton Swap we are changing the structure of how we store books. Previously, we asked students to give us their books, and we would store them for them.
... However, we now believe that the best way forward for Soton Swap is for sellers to keep their books themselves. This is advantageous for two reasons.
Firstly, it means that sellers need not come onto campus to give us their books in order for them to be put onto our website.
Secondly, it means that the range of stock Soton Swap offers is not limited by the amount of storage we have available.
As a result of this change in structure, we are asking sellers to collect their books. If you could collect them from Room 1101 on Wednesday 26th February in Avenue Campus (building 65) between 1-3pm, that would be great.
Please do not think that we are no longer interested in selling your books. We will continue to keep your books available online, and if a book sells, we will give you an email for you to give us your books, so that we can give it to the buyer.
Importantly, if you have collected your books, or have reason to believe that we no longer have your books in our storage — please ignore this email.
If you cannot collect your books this Wednesday please let us know so we can arrange an alternative time, or, if you no longer live in Southampton — alternative arrangements.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes you.
Many thanks,
Soton Swap

Hi everyone, I have a BIG announcement to share with you all.
I've really enjoyed my time setting up and leading Soton Swap over the past year and a half. However, now that I'm in my final year, I'm looking to pass the project on to someone else.
What I'm looking for is someone who is passionate about running a successful and profitable business. Someone who is willing to push the business to new boundaries, and someone who is willing to lead a great team of people.
... The benefits of this are not only a variety of brilliant skills, but something which will really really make your cv stand out from amongst the crowd. How many students can say they've run a successful business at university, which has processed thousands of pounds worth of books?
If you're interested, please message this Facebook page, and we'll get back to you. Please only apply if you're in your first or second year.
Don't worry if you don't have much experience, I didn't have any before starting. And we'll teach you how to go about all the different areas of the business.
Look forward to hearing from you,
James - project leader of soton swap.

Hi everyone,
Hope you're having a fun Monday!
This is just to say that unfortunately we can no longer accept any more books which you would like to drop off with us in order to sell. This is due to a current problem with our storage providers.
... Having said that, we are working on finding a new way for you to be able to sell your books which will mean you won't have to drop them off with us. Rather, you'll be able to keep them with you but they'll be displayed online for people to buy.
We'll keep you updated!
