About South London Sinfonia

We are an amateur orchestra based in Croydon

South London Sinfonia Description

Since its formation in 1927, the orchestra has offered enthusiastic amateurs, with a range of abilities, the opportunity to play together in an atmosphere which aims to promote enjoyment in music making.

David Porter was Musical Director from 2002 until this year. The orchestra has now appointed Dr. Brian Wilshere as its new MD.

The ensemble has a current membership of about 25. New members are welcome in all sections, especially Strings. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 8. 00pm – 10. 00pm.

Development of the orchestra was given a further boost by receipt of a grant from “Awards for All” (National Lottery).

The repertoire encompasses many classical works as well as those of a lighter nature in addition to some interesting and accessible contemporary pieces.

The orchestra has a long association with Saint Mildred’s Church, Addiscombe, Croydon. The church and its hall have been the centre of operations since 1965. The church is near a Tram stop and bus stops, is readily accessible from East Croydon station, and there is plentiful on street car parking.
