Southampton Accelerate

About Southampton Accelerate

Explosive and electrifying show for school children, all about particle physics: learn all about how to build a particle accelerator!

Southampton Accelerate Description

Interactive show featuring practical demonstrations, exploding hydrogen balloons and engaging explanations given by undergraduate and postgraduate Physics students. If you want to see the show, get in touch! Come and see the show at the University of Southampton, or we can come to your school. Let us show you how to build a particle accelerator!

The team:

Matt Brown is a Postgraduate Researcher in theoretical particle physics. His research involves finding out what the newly-discovered "Higgs boson" can tell us about the existence of extra dimensions of space.

Joe Spencer is a Postgraduate Researcher in nanotechnology. Joe is developing new techniques in the production of ultra-thin layers of materials that could be used to manufacture the next generation of computer chips.

Olivia Keenan is a final-year Master's student studying astrophysics. Next year Olivia will start her PhD in Cardiff looking at a huge sample of galaxies to explore the universe and discover what may be happening out there.
