Today in 1543.
King Henry VIII marries Catherine Parr, his sixth and last wife, at Hampton Court Palace.
The following children's rhyme rather neatly describes the fate of each wife:
... "divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived".

At least 35 people were killed at the launch of the battleship HMS Albion from the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company at Blackwall in 1898.
When the ship was launched it caused a massive tidal wave, which destroyed a wooden platform that some spectators had congregated on.

Just as important as D-Day to the Allies war effort in 1944 was Operation Shingle. The Anzio landings. The landing at Anzio took place on January 22nd 1944.
The operation was initially a huge success: the landing achieved complete surprise encountering no opposition and the VI Corps established a beachhead. A jeep patrol even made it as far as the outskirts of Rome. By the end of the day, 36,000 men had been landed with 3,200 vehicles. The Battle of Anzio followed, turning out as one of the bloodiest battles fought in Western Europe by the Allies in WW2. The Allies finally broke out in May, turned his forces north-west towards Rome which was captured on June 4th.
Rather unfairly, these men were nicknamed the D-Day Dodgers.
