We had the most amazing time on Wednesday visiting The Children’s Heart Unit (Ward 23) and the Intensive Care Unit at The Freeman with CHUF.
During a ward tour last month we met inspirational patients, parents and staff and found out about the incredible, life-changing, work the ward does and the challenges each person there faces, particularly around the Christmas season.
We wanted to bring a little bit of happiness and festive cheer to their day, so, working with our Head... Pastry Chef, Kristian, we brought along Afternoon Teas, here are some pictures. Merry Christmas to everyone there and thank you ❤️

Well we were lucky enough to get booked in to Trenchers tonight for our anniversary. What a lovely atmosphere, lovely meal and staff. The oysters with chilli jam were divine, I have it on good authority the prawn cocktail was amazing. Main meals were cod and chips and a fab Thai fish curry. Our server Chloe was just lovely and we can't wait to come back. Thank you Trenchers

We went to see the newly refurbished Dome at Spanish city, and it is stunning. My husband being from Whitley Bay, and us having lived across the road from the Dome for 33 years, we decided to enquire about hiring the Lighthouse suite on 24 August 2019 to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with an evening party.

As this turns out to be the bank holiday weekend in the wedding season, they cannot accommodate us. No weddings have already been booked for this particular weekend, but they are not prepared to take our booking for 'just for an evening celebration' as quoted from their email.

It seems that first come first served doesn't work with Spanish City.

It seems they only want big paying events now and 50 years of marriage being celebrated with 80 guests is 'just an evening celebration'.

It's such a shame as the facilities in the Dome at Spanish City are wonderful.

User

Visited yesterday the 23rd just surprised both the fish and chip shop and the Waffle company was not open, they have made a beautiful job on the restoration.

We had a look around and a drink in the champagne bar, think the are charging over the top on drinks, £10.20 for a pint of larger and a pint of dark Cider, looks to us it’s not marketed at everyone, we will visit again in November see how many are there during the day.

On that note I just hope it’s not going to be a white Elephant

User

Visited today, and it's been beautifully restored. I love the art deco, the vintage touches and the restoration of the dome. Can't wait to come and try out the champagne bar once it's fully open.

This place would make a lovely wedding venue, for anyone that's looking.

User

The renovation is amazing after watching the Dome deteriorate for more than the 20 years we have lived around the corner.

We have been in the Champagne Bar a couple of times and had a lovely time with a beautiful vista. I believe there are some teething problems with some of the eateries so maybe we will wait before we sample those.

User

My friend and I had afternoon tea today in the gallery of The Dome. I had trouble booking and when we turned up I was delighted by the service we were given, the Operations manager, Mo, made us feel not only special but also so very welcome like we were very dear friends. Thank you also to Rachel for being a very lovely waitress! The actual food was just amazing, so tasty and unbelievably great value, definitely the best afternoon tea I have had ( and I've sampled many highly regarded establishments!). I cannot recommend this place enough. Thank you, Mo

User

Great place, just what we need after the doom and gloom of the last decade on the sea front, it’s at the end of our street so a little too handy. Valerie’s is a great place for breakfast, coffee and a cake or as we did in the summer just sit outside with a glass of wine. We have also had afternoon tea for my mothers birthday which was served upstairs on the balcony, excellent quality definitely carb overload!

Trenchers, I’m not a fish lover but my wife had fish and chips and I had a burger, the chips are amazing and the wife said her fish was very nice, the burger was not the best but that’s not their specialty, they are just trying to cater for awkward non fish lovers like me!

We visited 1910 restaurant on its opening night and it was fantastic, yes it’s not the cheapest but if you want quality you pay for it, we won’t be a regular but will certainly return for special occasions. The champagne bar has fantastic views across the links to the lighthouse and across our wonderful coastline, prices are in line with what you would pay in any quality bar...don’t let the fact they call in the champagne bar put you off.The waffle bar has only recently opened so not tried that yet. If I was to be fussy I would say the staff still need brushing up on their skills and service can be slow at times, again this will come with experience, possibly more required at busier times but I appreciate they need to keep an eye on wages. Glad to see it is still getting regular support now the colder days/nights are setting in and it can only be good for other local businesses with the extra visitors.

User

Excellent meal at Trencher’s yesterday evening. Staff were delightful and it was lovely to see it so busy. Lindisfarne Oysters with chilli jam was wonderful. I had a beautifully cooked piece of haddock and my husband had the seafood platter that would have been enough to feed two of us. It was great to be able to have a pint of Spanish City Ale with it - lovely to see them using local producers.

We’re planning our return visit!

User

As amazing as it looks!

Family of 5 went for my birthday meal and it was all fabulous! Felt so special sitting under the dome! The food was delicious and the prices were really reasonable too...3 Course childrens meal plus drink for £6.95 is very good value indeed!

The bar was packed and had a great atmosphere too ....Cant wait to return to try each place! Especially excited for the 1910 restaurant and the waffles! Well done to all involved x

User

After years of decline Whitley Bay has made positive moves with their Development of The Spanish City. Quality and Prestige has given the town a boost. Just need to continue with the good work. Can’t see the good old days returning as a beach resort, more residential now. Never the less it will still attract visitors and it’s great for the residents to have some pride back for their town.

User

What an amazing job has been done at Spanish City! The restoration is magnificent- big congratulations to all concerned!

The Champagne Bar is fab - what a great experience to sip champagne overlooking our lovely beach and lighthouse - can’t wait to do it again!

Trenchers for a birthday dinner was good- not amazing just yet- it’s only a few days old, and it’ll definitely get better, and well worth another visit

Looking forward to the 1910 restaurant opening- we’ve already booked for our anniversary dinner!

Get over to the fantastic Spanish City! It’s great!!

User

Lovely decor. Two restaurants and a bar. One bottle of wine on list at £995! Food around £12 per main course. Exceptional service. Not sure how a set-up like this will make money in a place where money can be scarce. And when the sun buggars off and that north wind blows... who will be coming spend their money, anyway. Hope this place succeeds.

User

Beautifully refurbished, enjoyed a meal at Trenchers restaurant sitting in the centre of the Spanish City, v ground floor. Nice, prices comparable to other restaurants in the area (though I'm not sure the fish and meat platters were worthy of the cost).

Lovely to hear a pianist playing the (electric) grand piano.

About the Spanish City as a whole - yes, beautifully refurbished, but it's only restaurants, cafes and a bar - nothing to actually "attract" people to visit. (No doubt the other restaurants and cafes in the locality will suffer as a result of the new competition). Possibly could be a missed opportunity for the redevelopment of Whitley Bay that it doesn't contain some kind of community hub / art centre (or similar).

User

Trenchers was ok, I thought it lacked atmosphere a little, staff were friendly and nice, food was ok kids enjoyed theirs very much but I was less impressed. I had the Caesar salad and paid an extra £2 to add chicken and bacon which is just as well or it would have been a bowl of lettuce with Caesar sauce .. was nice enough but didn’t fill me much, I’m spoilt tho as I work in a restaurant which does the most amazing and huge Caesar salad, so they had big shoes to fill. So for 2 kids menu dishes I had to add a coke or tango as these weren’t included, a Caesar salad and a 175ml glass of Pino the price was £37.. I’ve had better and bigger portions for less, probably not impressed enough to return.

User

Superbly refurbished and I really wanted to like it but it appears to be just a high end food court. As we walked around the various areas the expectation of finding anything different (like a shop or gallery of any description) soon evaporated with the realisation that it’s basically food and drink with views of the sea.

User

Booked afternoon tea in the gallery for a friends get together. When we arrived we were advised we would be seated in the champagne bar. I was initially happy with this as there would be lovely sea views. The table and view were great. Service was haphazard - they were very friendly and trying very hard but disorganised and rushed off their feet - sure that will improve with time. One of the teas wasn't available which also seems like a silly issue that they should be able to manage better. The afternoon tea itself was really nice - lovely savouries, scones and desserts. The main problem was that the seating area was so busy with people just drinking - people standing very close to our table making us feel a bit claustrophobic, very noisy including noisy children climbing around, large families gathered around tables that weren't big enough for them so many standing so the result was it felt like being in a pub rather than a relaxing upmarket place for afternoon tea. This could be fixed by having a policy where people need to wait to be seated in the table area with standing only by the bar area. I don't think they intend it to be just another pub so they really need to address this. Around 4 it quietened down and then was a lovely place to be. Hopeful they will address the teething issues as it's a great addition to Whitley Bay and very popular, deservedly so

User

Disappointed to have made a reservation for breakfast only to be turned away and told they weren’t opening for another two hours. I contacted admin via email for an explanation and have had no response. I understand teething problems for new businesses however some communication with your customers, who’ve given a contact number at the time of booking, would surely be the least expected? Then to have zero acknowledgement of the problem when contacted too?? Poor show. I hope future customers aren’t ignored when problems arise.

User

Afternoon tea on the 12th August - We were seated after a little wait after booking a week in advance. Waited 20 minutes for menus which I ended up going to find someone to ask for. Once ordered we waited over an hour for our afternoon tea, drinks were served quickly which meant they were long gone by the time our food arrived. We asked a couple of times how long it would be and were met with poor excuses about the sausage rolls taking longer than they anticipated, as well as it being busier with pre bookings than anticipated. Once the food arrived it really was lovely but we had to rush it down as was creeping up to the 2 hour mark since arriving.

Complimentary tea and coffee were provided due to our wait.

A lot of service issues need to be resolved here as letting a lovely venue down.

Would also like to see more vegetarian/vegan options available

User

Was really excited to visit here so booked in for afternoon tea at Valerie's got there and no tables available. Gave name & details several times and we were told would need to wait for some people to be finished. After waiting for longer and giving our details again we were eventually given a different table. A different person took us over then gave us a menu I explained again booked in for afternoon tea so didn't need food menu. So we were asked for our drink order my son (6) was asked if he would tea or coffee? I asked if alternative maybe a glass of milk she didn't think so but went off to check. By this point to be honest the treat aspect had gone so we left. I understand there are going to be some teething problems but it was so disorganised no one knew what they were doing & if booked in not sure where our table was? Really disappointing
