It’s been a very busy week this week and made a little hard with the very hot weather we’ve been so lucky to encounter ☀️😅.
I won’t complain of course because there are firefighters that are working on the moorland around us at the moment in extreme conditions.
It’s great to see lots of our customers and of course some wonderful new customers having their chimneys and appliance serviced in readiness for the heating season!
... Don’t forget to book in for your summer sweep and service!! ☀️😎🎩

This inspection was carried out a while ago. The video shows the result of a smoke evacuation check undertaken. You can clearly see that the brickwork was in a serious condition and the midfeathers between one of the flues had completely collapsed, smoke can be seen entering the separate flues. Having appliances and chimneys regularly checked is important to identify any potential problems.

Great day today visiting the Hearth and Home Show. Meeting the manufacturers of some of the latest and up and coming stoves. There are some fantastic appliances available now that meet new legislations in 2022. It was also great to catch up with some of our fellow sweep friends Katie Sweep and David Soot. We’ve come away from the show with some great ideas, products and plans! 😀🎩

User

Another training day today. We’ve been learning more about the creosote treatment which we currently provide, and the Eldfast ceramic chimney lining system. Quite an educational day out. Great to meet some of our fellow sweeps 😊🎩

Good evening all,
It’s a bit of a lengthy post, but nevertheless an important one at the same time. For those customers that already have a stove or open fire if you know of any friends or relatives that are intending on having a solid fuel appliance please take a read.
I've visited number of customers recently that are renovating their house and in particularly wishing to have an stove installed. They have wanted the chimney to be swept in readiness for a stove and thinkin...g of installing it themselves.
Please be very careful, solid fuel appliances must be installed by a verified competent person for example a HETAS engineer, or certified by a building inspector if independently fitted. An engineer will issue you with a Certificate of Compliance (Building Regulation Compliance Certificate) on the completion of installation work.
The certificate demonstrates that the installation complies with the relevant Building Regulations. The information on the certificate is used to record your installation, and used to notify the Local Authority. This self certification takes the place of a Local Authority Building Notice.
The information can be required to validate your home insurance and will be required in any home selling process. Failure to notify the Local Authority can be an offence resulting in enforcement action.
As always, take care, stay safe and ensure those chimneys are regularly swept 🔥🎩 #sparklingflues

We’ve had a few enquiries recently regarding the noise of birds in their chimneys or that birds are dropping twigs down the chimney. This is a common occurrence this time of the year as we are now in the nesting season.
This little fella in the photo was a pigeon that we rescued recently that had unfortunately found its way down into the fireplace! Luckily they don’t nest in the chimney. The pigeon was fine, a little stunned but flew off and didn’t look back 😀
But now tha...t the bird nesting season is upon us now if you suspect the presence of birds nesting in your chimney, or nesting material in the fireplace. Please do not attempt to clear it from your chimney by lighting a fire, you will simply fill your home with smoke or you could cause a chimney fire.
There is only one safe way to clear a nest or other blockage from your chimney and that's to have it removed properly and safely by a competent person with appropriate equipment and knowledge.
The most common birds are jackdaws and starlings that like to nest in chimneys. Even birds that have built nests previously in your chimney will often return the following year to nest in the same place.
If you leave it to the middle of March it will be too late as it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to destroy or remove a nest while it is in use. Unfortunately you will have to wait until the end of August to remove the nest.
The Law states the following:
The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 & Protection of Birds Act 1954 The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 is the primary legislation which protects animals, plants, and certain habitats in the UK. All birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law and the penalties for deliberately destroying active nests are now quite severe. The maximum penalty that can be imposed for an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act - in respect of a single bird, nest or egg - is a fine of up to £5,000, and/or six months imprisonment. 🎩🦅😃

Quite a busy week this week. We attended the annual Guild of Master Sweeps Exhibition last weekend. It was lovely to meet our fellow sweeps and great suppliers. I took my little trainees with me this time!
It was also lovely to receive a certificate for my Master Sweep status.
Following our evening dinner we were all given a 100 Dollar note (a pretend one) to play with and invited to attend the casino. I must say, I wasn’t particularly successful 😂.
... The weekend soon past though and we were back to visiting our lovely customers 😃 🎩

Hello all,
As you may be aware there has been a lot of talk recently in the media about the use of wood burning appliances and open fires. I am often asked if the Government are going to ban wood burning stoves or open fires, and I see some customers quite concerned over these speculations.
In a latest publication from DEFRA they state “We are not considering banning domestic burning. The Government recognises that many households have installed wood-burning stoves, and the ...Government is not seeking to prevent their use or installation. But we are keen to encourage consumers to switch to cleaner wood burning, this will directly benefit consumers in their homes, as well as improving the local environment.”
DEFRA are currently seeking evidence from businesses like ourselves within the industry and data on the use of solid fuels such as house coal, smokeless coal, manufactured solid fuels and wet wood for domestic heating. The Government’s long term strategy is to see households move away from these polluting fuels towards cleaner technologies.
DEFRA have recently produced a practical guidance to encourage clean burning to the public. Please try to take the time to read this.
https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/…/171204120 0_171010_open_fires_…
As you know we do try to encourage the use of good quality dry wood and smokeless fuels, as well as ensuring your appliances and chimneys are regular swept and maintained. As we have mentioned before burning wood with high moisture content generates little heat as most of the energy is being used to drive off the moisture in the form of water vapour and steam. This mixes with the resins and products of combustion to create tar that can damage the appliance and block the flue, which in turn risk the dangers of a chimney fire or fumes escaping back into the room.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. And don’t forget that annual sweep 🎩 #chimneysweep #sparklingflues

Not a very good housewarming present for these customers recently. If you are purchasing a property it is always advisable to ask for any solid fuel appliance to be checked by a qualified professional including a full camera inspection. Very often they are overlooked by surveyors.

User

Great advice from Katie Sweep on not storing wood next to the stove, it can and does happen....🔥

User

I hope you’ve had a good Christmas and New Year.
Now the decorations are taken down just a thought if you're thinking of what to do with your old Christmas tree. Please don't use it for firewood! Pine wood has an exceptionally high resin content; this resin becomes creosote (tar) when burnt and is very likely to ‘tar up’ the flue. Also the needles and small branches may ‘flare’ when burnt and could ignite any residual soot or tar in the chimney🎄🔥

User

Well that’s it, rods and brushes have been cleaned and put away for 2017 whilst we spend some much deserved time with our family 😀.
We’d like to thank you all for your support this year, and wish you the most Sparkling Christmas and New Year 😁🎄 🎉
See you all again in 2018!

Lovely team who did a very efficient job and offered further advice. Would definitely recommend!

User

I have been extremely impressed and happy with the professional, timely service provided by Emma and her husband. Unfortunately they had to break news to me that my chimney needed lining (I have recently moved into a property with an existing stove), and thank goodness they did as I now have safe, clean and working wood burner! Not only were they thorough they took the time to explain everything to me (as a newbie to woodburners) and they managed to line my chimney with 2 days notice, in time for my carpets going down. What a fantastic service and lovely people. Thank you :) Hannah

Brilliant service. Really pleased. I was amazed how clean and tidy the living room was afterwards too- I thought I would have had to do at least a little bit of vacuuming, but no!
