The Woodland is also also common land
The Wood is a habitat to a wealth of mammals, birds and invertebrates. There is a meandering stream that runs right through the wood . The name Speckled Wood is believed to have come from the butterflies of the same name that thrived here.

Historically

The Woodland was previously known as part of the Vine Farm Estate up until 1889. It was then formally declared a Green Space in the Hastings General Development Plan 1930. The Woodland has been used by the villagers and children of Ore for some 84 years since.

In the council's recent public consultation on its Development Management Plan, 3560 responses were received on Speckled Wood by Friends of Speckled Wood , all of them suggesting that it should be preserved as open space. This is far more comments than on any other site in the borough. . The woodland area historically has been around since before 1767 It was previously known as the Hollow or 'Olla' as it had a pond at one end that the children in the area used to play in.

Friends of Speckled Wood will be leading the fight to keep the entire Woodland safe.
