Spencer'S On The Square Description

Welcome to Spencer's on the Square. . . once one of the UK’s most successful and renowned auction houses, Henry Spencer’s auction house lay at the heart of market life in Retford and played a significant part in the social history of the town. As custodian of this fantastic building we feel that Spencer’s on the Square owes a duty to its heritage to be the very best that it can be in every possible way.

With this in mind, for Spencer’s we have adopted a mantra: quality throughout. This extends to every aspect of what we do; from the food you eat, the drinks you enjoy and the service ethos we encourage within our staff. It is our aim to provide you with an experience that is second to none, both in Retford and beyond.

This menu is, we believe, a reflection of that commitment to quality. We have carefully designed a range of dishes that incorporate the finest ingredients, locally sourced where possible, brought together with expert precision and beautifully presented for you to enjoy.

With the kids’ holidays fast approaching, we’ve tailored our new children's menu to give them a tasty treat that’s freshly cooked with healthy ingredients 🥕

User

Went with my mum for breakfast, we both really enjoyed it, friendly staff they were very welcoming will definitely be going back highly recommend.

Went to Spencer's last night for their Burn's night supper. The food was amazing. Service also top notch. Hats off the chef as we were told he is a colonial cousin from across the pond so Scottish cuisine not being his forté.

The only downside? The piper. He played with a tune that can only be described as two stray cats having a rather large disagreement in a dustbin.

If you plan to hold a Burn's night supper every year I would highly recommend the Yorkshire piper as your choice.

With that being said Spencer's is a warm friendly place. Great staff and great food.

We celebrated my husband’s birthday at Spencer’s today, the cocktail’s, food and service were fantastic (as is always the case). Charles and the team made us all feel very welcome including our dog Loki, who always gets spoilt by the team. Looking forward to visiting again!

User

Love it the food is lovely staff are so friendly and they always make us feel welcome they are great with my little boy and he gets little extra treats too from the restaurant manager who always comes over and has a little chat to him whenever we are in

User

I visited here on 2 mar 18 and had the pancakes and sticky pear pud from the vegan menu. It was just so delicious that I want it all over again tonight

Good atmosphere price and choice

User

I have to say the artwork on your drinks menus is simply fabulous and clearly painted by a very talented artist. I hope you paid them a well-deserved fortune for making your drinks menu unique and original

First dining at Spencer's, I went with my partner, my 3 year old daughter and new born on Sunday afternoon for dinner. The staff were very friendly and were really good with my daughter as she is very chatty with everyone she meets.

The meals were absolutely delicious and very good portion sizes too.

User

Excellent as always, service first class,I don't know how they can make a burger that tastes like steak. Sadly on this occasion I could not manage a pudding so I must try harder next time. I have still got my mind set on giving the chateau steak a go,just got to get the wife to agree first!

User

Came here for New Years Eve. Every course of food (including canapés and cocktails) was perfectly cooked, delicious and faultless, staff were so friendly and hard working and are really a credit to Spencer's. Only minor improvement I would suggest for next NYE is separating dining area and bar area as drinkers came over and stood right in front of the wonderful singer and very close to our tables while we were still eating. Would definitely return as it was a wonderful night. Thank you to all the amazing chefs and staff for a lovely and memorable evening.

User

Ate in Spencer's last Saturday, table of 8, service was good, food choice was varied and ordered food arrived in a timely manner, was well presented and tasted delicious. Cocktails order were beautifully presented and were very tasty! All reasonably priced. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thanks.

User

We visited for breakfast today, the food was lovely but most of the staff appeared to be quite rude. We needed the bill splitting as we were a party of three families, the server clearly didn’t want to have to do this. We also visited a year ago and found the staff to be rude/dismissive then, a shame to see it hasn’t changed.

We popped in for dinner on Saturday. Placed our order for drinks which came quite quickly; the mains however took an age to come out. At least 45 mins and it wasn't even busy. I had the luxury coz in batter and it wasn't very big and the chips weren't very warm. My partners 100% beef burger looked like it had been cooked all weekend although the homemade onion rings were magnificent. Overpriced but ok for a one off

User

Sadly disappointing. Our 3rd time here. Unfortunately the food was reheated, which was obvious due to the pastry on the tart being chewy, as we're the veg in the risotto. I cook at home and lot so I know when things have been frozen and reheated! And to add to our disappointing meal there was plastic from the tupperware in the risotto . Unfortunately it's put us off returning which is a shame as we've really enjoyed our meal here in the past

Our first visit here, as visiting friends in the area - beautiful decor and nice ambiance, although the service and food was somewhat of a disappointment - I and my friend had steak as a treat which was over cooked and pan fried - not griddled - so was very greasy and not very pleasant to the taste. Very few over cooked chips, 3 cherry tomatoes which were greasy and a tiny bit of mushroom on the top of the steak. We ordered some sauce for the steak, which arrived during the the meal, nit with it, and it was made with cream which I cannot eat and to which we weren't informed of either. The food in our opinion was so over priced for very little on the plate - we asked for olives and bread to share as a starter which was nice, but we waited a long time for that to arrive also. We ordered small glasses of wine to have with our meal which came half way through finishing the meal and one of which was the wrong wine also. Whilst it was a lovely place inside, you really need to up your gain with the service and food side of things here - there are other places around with more value for money, service and good food.

User

Have been in twice now the first time was on a Sunday, it was very very busy, I ordered breakfast which was cold when it arrived sent it back, came back microwaved! Rather than a new breakfast, (we were offered 10% off the bill) went back yesterday coffee was cold so sent back but the fish finger sandwiches were amazing and they gave my mum a free sample of the salad dressing. Over all a good experience but food and drinks need to be hot when served

User

We visit Spencers every Sunday morning for coffee and light breakfast, and often go for morning coffee and other days plus occasional Sunday lunch and brunch. Service has deteriorated over the past weeks, getting slow. This morning we ordered coffee and teacakes, waited 35 minuted! When we realised people going in after us were getting served whilst we were still waiting, I went in to see When we might expect our coffees. We were told they were serving in order , they clearly were not as peop!e who came in after us were half way through their coffee. We told them to forget our order. We will not be going back.

We have been a few times for a drink and a snack.Everything was ok.I think its a lovely place.nice building and decor. On sunday december 3rd we called in for dinner about 4pm.it wasn't that busy.we ordered drinks at the bar which took ages to come. The staff didnt seem interested.A very poor choice mainly sunday dinner. No kids menu.we were told its just a smaller portion for kids.It was £14 for a serloin beef dinner. It was very poor and very small.1 piece of beef 2 small potatoes 1 spoonful of mash.a side order of cauliflower cheese carrots and broccoli. Also a yorkshire pudding.my beef was ok but my wifes and my mums were mainly fat. They couldn't eat it.we were all hungry after.we complained about the meat and the waitress said ok.I complained to someone else and the manager apologised and knocked 1 meal off the bill.I have had better sunday dinners in normal pubs or toby carvery which are alot cheaper.I'm afraid i will not return for food. Its a shame because it is a nice place in nice surroundings.

User

I wouldnt recommend this place..went for lunch it took too long cost and 35.00 for 2 meals and 2 dinks..cancelled the icecream as it took too long to be served when i asked for a refund (as i chose from the 12.99 menu for 2 courses) they refunded me 1.50..so i paid 12.99 for a bloody goats cheese salad the size of a starter!!!!

User

Ate here this evening, food left a lot to be desired, obviously frozen and reheated. Ordered the beef stew which was more like carrots and peas in gravy with only 4 pieces of meat, had to ask several times for water. It was not busy so no excuse for poor service. On the plus side the waitress was pleasant and polite. Sadly we won't return
