Korma is easilone of the most recognisable Indian dishes in the UK - but do you know its origins? The word "korma" is derived from Urdu "ḳormā" or "ḳormah", meaning "braise". This, in turn, is derived from Turkish "kavurma", literally meaning "cooked meat". Korma has its roots in the Mughlai cuisine of modern-day India and Pakistan. It is a characteristic dish which can be traced back to the 16th century. The dish is particularly popular in present-day Northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In the UK, a korma is a normally a mildly spiced dish with a thick sauce. It often features almonds, cashews or other nuts, and coconut or coconut milk.

Dansak is a popular Indian dish, originating among the Parsi Zoroastrian community. It combines elements of Persian and Gujarati cuisine. Dansak is made by cooking meat with a mixture of lentils and vegetables.
The name originates from Persia (Iran). "Dhan" is Persian/Urdu for "seed"- referring to grains; "Sak" (or the derived Hindi/Urdu term) "Saag" =vegetable greens.) The Gujarati element of the recipe is the liberal use of a variety of Indian spices.
In Parsi homes, dansak... is traditionally made on Sundays, owing to the long preparation time required to cook the lentils and vegetables into a mush.
Dansak is very popular in UK restaurants. Although the recipe varies from restaurant to restaurant, expect a hot, sweet and sour dish, with the addition of coconut and (occasionally) a pineapple ring!

Have you ever tried our Biryani? It's a one-dish rice-based meal, which consists of layered meat and rice, served with a side vegetable curry. It's a favourite at Bangladeshi wedding receptions, Indian family dinners and is popular as far as the Middle East and Thailand. Trace the history of this delicious dish by clicking the link below:

We went there last night without pre booking,we were welcomed in and seated straight away although it was very busy, the food was fantastic the decor very now and staff very friendly, the best part was the bill it was very reasonable, will certainly return.

User

The food was delicious and the staff very helpful and friendly although one or two made me feel like they were rushing us to order and later to pay up and leave despite the place not being that busy....however won't stop me visiting again .

User

Probably the best curry ever! Deliciously fresh food, fantastic service and great value! Can’t wait to go back to Norwich for a return visit.

User

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars! Food is delicious and the service is superb! Warm and friendly atmosphere and I felt extremely well looked after. Highly recommend! Thank you to all the staff.

User

I have eaten there now several times with various friends and family. The food is superb with each dish just so flavoursome the service is fast which i personally like as you can fit more into an evening. The decor is very now and just adding to the atmosphere.

User

I eat here a few times a year, whenever there is a Beer Festival, Ale Trail etc. There are usually 6-10 of us eating. I must say the service is superb. The team are magnificent and make you feel so welcome. There is a great atmosphere. The food is always cooked well tasty and arrives at the same time. I have eaten in many Indian restaurants across the UK and Spice Lounge is in my top 3. I would eat there weekly if I could..

Always the best. We introduced some friends to the best Indian food in Norwich. They had never been here before, they love it and stated it was the best they have ever tried.

User

Great welcome x friendly staff and good Indian cuisine. Happy to recommend

User

First time at Spice Lounge with my friend Kat. Really enjoyed our meal. Food was delicious, service good. V nice

User

Food was great as it always is but last night we didn’t get the best of service which I have to say is unusual. We were looked after by someone I’d never seen working in there before so Just an off night I hope.

The 3 stars are solely based on my visit last night, otherwise it’s been perfect every other time.

User

It was ok. The staff were in bit of a hurry to get us out and even moving the tables as we were getting up to go. I am a veggie and hate spicy food so only went because that's where our works meal was booked so I will not be returning but what I had was fine.

User

Food was ok, service wasn't.

Waiter was curt, disinterested, humourless, distant, made no attempt to engage with us, and rushed us through the seating and ordering process like a whirlwind - made us feel like we were an inconvenience for him. Waiting staff are supposed to create a comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable environment for diners - not this one. And of course when we did need something he was nowhere to be seen.

Unlikely to return or recommend.

The Worst Restaurant in Norwich

Yesterday, Sunday 18 March 2018 my guest and I visited this restaurant and agreed the interior was very acceptable, but how this changed. When asked what we would like to drink, we said Lemon and Lime with ice and a slice. It took a further to waiters to check what drinks we would like and the result was we were served a bottle of lukewarm water. We ordered 2 plain poppodoms and 2 spicy ones, but only plain ones turned up. During the next 15 minutes, we had to put up with being asked 8 times if we were ready to order and each time very politely we said we would say when ready to order, but this went to no avail. For the meal, I ordered a vegetable balti and plain rice but it came with pilau rice. My guest ordered 2 starters instead of the main meal, and this had to be confirmed twice, but when it arrived it was 2 main meals. There were 12 visits by waiters asking if we were ok, but it would have been a waste of time answering as the just could not listen. The final straw was when a very young waiter came over and started talking which was bizarre. He spoke how happy he was as he had won £45.00 on a football bet as Chelsea had won. I hasten to add that this restaurant closes on a Friday for all involved in being called to prayers. I presume that the Mosque will be absolutely delighted to hear of this. We felt we could take no more and asked for the remainders of our meal, even though wrongly ordered be placed in cartons to take out. When paying (£27.00) which I am sure was wrong I asked for a receipt, but did not get one, only from the debit card machine. Delighted to be out of this disturbing joke of a restaurant and into the comfort of home we decided to eat what had now become a take-out only to find some of the food had not been packed. I then emailed the restaurant all of what had taken place. Today at 12:45 pm I arrived at the restaurant to speak with the manager, who at the time was on the phone regarding broadband problems, so I was under the impression he had not received my email. It would have made no impression whatsoever as this individual was not in the slightest bit interested or concerned and he kept repeating that I had paid but refused to show me the bill. This must be theft, as of why else refuse to show it? Norwich is full of the most wonderful restaurants that you can imagine and The Spice Lounge deserves to close as it does not understand how to treat clients. You would have a far better waiter experience at McDonald's, and they don't employ waiters. I will continue my comments and complaints against the Spice Lounge until they understand that they can not treat clients in this way.

I've eaten in Indians all over the country with food allergies except this place they wouldn't even attempt to cater for me. They were rude...unhelpful. They snatched the menus of the table. Left me feeling ashamed and annoyed. Avoid

I came to the spice lounge back in 2005 when it first opened, I couldn't fault it, however on returning tonight for my 30th birthday I can hand on heart say that it was the worst ran restaurant I have ever been to! Table was booked in advance for 8.30 after being sat down at 9.30 we finally got some food at 10,40 the waiters were very apologetic and tried there best to help, but by the time we actually got food we were all over hungry and unable to eat it, the manager offered us a free drink and popadoms which was great but then added them to the bill when we had to pay, when I disputed this he simply said just pay your bill, you done nothing but moan all night! Yes I had moaned because this was supposed to be a meal followed by drinks for a birthday celebration however we have spent all night waiting to be fed, had he have said sorry but were fully booked we would have gone else where! we were not the only people to complain, such a shame because good authentic Indian restaurants are scarce round here and this one has now become another bog standard curry house! The manager is rude, arrogant and un apologetic I would recommend people contemplating eating here to stay at home and order a take away, it will be much quicker and probably be just as nice!
