Shine are grateful to Stuart McDonald MP for raising the issue of fortification at Minister's Health Questions earlier this week.
We were delighted to hear Seema Kennedy pledge to launch the long promised consultation into fortification of flour with Folic Acid before the summer.
Following that commitment, Shine, together with a who's who of the country's leading experts, write to the Minister for Public Health today, urging her to deliver on this promise.
... A huge thank you to our friends and colleagues at the following organisations for their ongoing support in our fight for fortification.
Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland Tommy's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RCOG Nutrition Society Medical Women's Federation British Dietetic Association British Nutrition Foundation and British Association of Perinatal Medicine
Not to mention the sterling work of Nigel Dodds and Owen Smith MP who've worked so hard to keep fortification high on the agenda.

Even the most careful couples can find themselves expecting a baby they hadn't planned for. It doesn't matter whether you're actively trying, or trying to avoid becoming pregnant, watch our video to see why you ought to start preparing now.

So why are we appealing for you to start taking Folic Acid? Simple.
Taking a daily 400mcg supplement has been clinically proven to reduce the chances of a neural tube defect developing during pregnancy.
"...but I'm not trying for a baby"
... We know, but Folic Acid takes time to work and 40% of UK pregnancies are not planned. This simple, convenient and affordable precaution can help to prevent Spina Bifida and Anencephaly which develop within 28 days of conception, long before many realise they are pregnant.

Contraception is not 100% effective, and taking the contraceptive pill has been shown to reduce folate levels in women, meaning you'd need to allow time to correct that deficiency if you decide to start trying for a baby. So, basically, what we're saying is...
