About Spirit Of Yorkshire Distillery

The home of Filey Bay, Yorkshire Single Malt Whisky.
Our barley. Our water. Our stills. Our spirit.

----
Making Yorkshire's first Single Malt Whisky from field to bottle on the East Coast. Open to the public 7 days a week for lunch, tours and tastings.

Spirit Of Yorkshire Distillery Description

At the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby, we make Filey Bay, the county’s first single malt whisky. We’re obsessed with distilling, from grain to glass. Our instinctive approach is all about taking the best of tradition and applying new thinking. We didn’t set out to just replicate Scotch, but to create a whisky that is filled with our own unique spirit and that of our local area.

The distillery is sited close to where we live and work on our farm. All our ingredients have impeccable provenance. We’re committed to making every drop of our whisky from first principles. We only use locally and sustainably produced ingredients – all the barley and spring water we use is grown and sourced here, on our family farm. These are the same ingredients that go into the Great Taste Award-winning beers at our sister company, the Wold Top Brewery, which also makes the initial alcohol (wash) needed to create and distill our whisky. This unique approach and still set-up was pioneered with the guidance of renowned whisky expert, Dr. Jim Swan – designed to get the best from our ingredients and create a unique and distinctive whisky.

The distillery is open for tours, led by the distillers themselves. As well as seeing behind the scenes of a working distillery, visitors will enjoy exclusive tastings of our New Make Spirit. Visitors are invited to enjoy a proper cup of coffee and tasty dishes made from local produce in the Pot Still Coffee Shop. The curious can also discover ‘whiskies of the world’ in the distillery shop, along with Spirit of Yorkshire merchandise.

We hope to welcome you to the distillery soon.

Cheers, The Spirit of Yorkshire Team.

Don’t forget that the Tour de Yorkshire is coming through Hunmanby on Saturday 4th May!
We’ll be opening our doors extra early that day (8:00am) and a free hot drink will be on offer with every meal (excluding cake).
With a big car park on offer at the Distillery and only a short distance from the cycle route, why not make a day of it by coming to see us, followed by a walk into the village to watch the race?

As our resident front man Alastair James is away this month, we're incredibly excited to have Edwina Hayes back at the distillery to fill in for our next Jazz n Blues evening!
Edwina’s beautifully written songs, charming stage presence and voice of an angel have won her a reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana.
She has opened numerous shows for Jools Holland and Van Morrison as well as her own gigs playing stages everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to The Royal Albert Hall. The title track of her album Pour Me A Drink was covered by Nanci Griffith who calls her 'the sweetest voice in England' and her cover of the Randy Newman song Feels Like Home was featured in the Cameron Diaz film My Sister's Keeper and has since had over eight million plays on You Tube.

Stopping on the side of the drive to crouch down and assess how his crops are growing is one of Tom’s favourite things to do. If you’re in the car with him, be prepared to have to admire the green shoots...
Our malting barley is predominantly Concerto – planted in spring, we harvest it in August. To find out more about how we choose what type of barley to use, head to our website to read our blog.

“Longer in bed, weighs like lead” – that’s what Geoffrey who worked at the farm in the 80s and 90s used to say. And the incredible weather at the end of February meant that for the first time in living memory, we had all the barley planted before the 1st March. So we’re hoping for amazing things from this year’s crop… all we can do now is wait and see!

On Friday, we spent the afternoon at the inaugural "Star Women in Business Awards" in Scarborough. The event recognised the achievements of businesswomen across the Scarborough/coastal region, from every size of business. Along with our sister brewery, The Wold Top Brewery, we were really proud to sponsor the award for ‘Stellar Engineering and Industry Apprentice’ and send huge congratulations to the winner Samantha from Dale Power Solutions.
As sponsors, we put tickets in a...ll of the goody bags to win one of 10 joint tours of the brewery and the distillery plus commemorative glasses. If you had one of these numbers in your bag – 7, 5, 27, 44, 96, 134, 141, 218, 232 or 178 – please call the brewery on 01723 892222 to redeem your prize. Congratulations!

Going forward, each month we’ll be looking in-depth at the creation process of whisky so that you can really see what we’re doing here in Hunmanby. First up is barley, a crucial ingredient in whisky. The Yorkshire Wolds are one of the best places to grow malting barley in the UK and we’ve been growing it here at Hunmanby Grange since the Mellor family bought the farm in 1945. Over the next few weeks we’ll be taking you through our growth process on our social channels, and if you want to know more about our thoughts on barley varieties and their impact on the end product, then head to our blog where we discuss it in great detail (warning, it's quite long, you’ll want a cup of tea and a really good biscuit to read it with).

Fancy working at Yorkshire’s first ever single malt distillery? Or know someone who might?
We’re looking for a cheery, charming and creative person to join us in the Pot Still Coffee Shop and the Distillery Shop. The role would be part-time (including weekends), paying the national living wage. We’d like applicants to have customer service experience and ideally to have worked in a coffee shop/cafe before (though we will provide training too of course).
If this sounds like something for you then please send your CV to Serena at shop@spiritofyorkshire.com. Alternatively if you know someone else who could be interested then please do share this post or send them our way! Thanks!

A wonderful place. The tour was superb and picked up more information than at any of the other larger whiskey distillery tours I have been on prior. The shop stoc s some very nice bottles from all over the world including places I never knew made whiskey. We also purchased a fantastic bespoke lamp which look great in our home. Plus the bacon sandwiches are to die for. All in all a wonderful experience. Don't expect to bring a bottle home with you just yet, but you will sample the future whiskey they will produce. We will be back soon.
