Working Mission Statement for the CIO, Square Pegs Charity. updated 03 /03 /2016.

This statement refers primarily to the constitutional objects set out in clause 3 of our constitution. This Mission Statement should enable you to understand our charitable Aims & Objectives. We incorporate several charitable purposes, with 2 main charitable projects; Square Pegs Charity (SPC) Holidays and Square Pegs Charity (SPC) Community Workshop Space. We will be fundraising to support the running of our premises as a community capacity building, support our workshops & provide free /and or reduced price holidays to as many of those nominated as possible.

Square Pegs Round Holes is derived from the idea that in society we are often forced to conform to another person (or organisation’s) idea of normality, to fit into a neat ‘round hole’ pre drilled for us. However by forcing ourselves, or being forced by others, to squeeze our ‘square peg’ selves in that round hole we are stripped of our unique individuality, our passion and creativity, often leading to a fencing in of the mind, body and soul, a losing of oneself. Many of us are Square Pegs, and when not being encouraged to; be, and think, creatively, or take adequate rest, our energy and self-esteem often leads into a sense of disjointedness, this can manifest with both our families & peers. This increases poor mental and physical health, and isolation amongst many in the community.

Our charitable purposes are listed below and are split between both projects as described above;

We endeavour to aid the relief of the side effects of poverty, where there are disadvantages and difficulties arising from the lack of financial or material resources. (clause 3. 1) In this instance SPC Community workshops provide free and /or heavily subsidised arts, crafts & holistically based workshops for the whole community, primarily encouraging social inclusion. And SPC Holidays provide free and / or heavily subsidised holidays, at a variety of holiday homes around the UK. The free holiday nomination criteria incorporates those who may be experiencing difficulties arising from a lack of financial resources. Those families which are nominated for financial reasons will be considered a priority.

We endeavour to increase the advancement of education by increasing individual and collective knowledge and our beneficiaries understanding of specific areas of study, skills and expertise. (clause 3. 2) In this instance SPC Community Workshops engage in community education as part of their workshop programme, inviting in those from external agencies which will aid the purpose when necessary. SPC Community Workshops will therefore, promote lifelong learning, by focusing on the development of the individual’s capabilities, competences, skills and understanding. In the future we would also like to take our workshop within the school and college environment, and have existing links in place. SPC Community Workshops also aim to develop a community think tank, with the results being used for local social good. With the view of producing academic material for the development of seminars, conferences and lectures in the charities own name.

We endeavour to encourage an advancement of health issues by promoting Good health, for the mind & body, as well as supplying activities that have a proven beneficial effect on health. (clause 3. 3) SPC Community Workshops help to alleviate human suffering, by promoting positive role modelling and the importance of good mental health through its workshops. This includes conventional methods as well as complementary, alternative or holistic methods which are concerned with healing mind, body and spirit in the alleviation of symptoms and the cure of illness. Also SPC Community Workshops actively encourage the advancement of good citizenship & community development by bringing those of differing demographics together encouraging & promoting a healthy and balanced mind and social circle. whereas SPC Holidays aid in the relief of the side effects of sickness by providing free and /or heavily subsidised holidays to those that have been nominated, encouraging family bonding time, at a time of heightened stress and uncertainty. Nominations are requested in email format. Those nominations that may ease the suffering or assist the recovery of people who are sick, convalescent or disabled are considered a high priority. Both projects encourage the promotion of volunteering, with a high proportion of our stakeholders coming from, or being encouraged into the voluntary sector.

We endeavour to encourage an advancement of the arts & culture. Where ‘Culture’ is a broad term often used in the context of advancing art or heritage, with respect to SPC workshops. And with respect to SPC Holidays, the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular group of people, or society, lifestyle, customs, traditions. (clause 3. 4) Our SPC Workshops encourage the advancement of art, (‘Heritage’ might be regarded as part of a country’s local or national history and traditions which are passed down through successive generations. ) by promoting various forms of art and crafts and craftsmanship at a national /professional and local /amateur level, our workshops will allow our beneficiaries to experience differing art & craft styles, and we will often bring in specialist practitioners to encourage the development of new skills. And, our SPRH Holidays, encourage family time being spent together, in often adverse circumstances. The holiday homes are situated on a family friendly holiday park, with good disabled access and appropriate entertainment and other amenities.

We endeavour to encourage the advanced promotion of equality and diversity and eliminating discrimination and promoting diversity in society, by the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of disability, age, sex or sexual orientation. (clause 3. 5) Our SPC workshops focus on integrating all of its beneficiaries irrelevant of their disability, age, sex or sexual orientation. We have already forged links with local schools, businesses and community organisations /groups, these relationships are eager to work alongside us to be of further benefit to the community.

We endeavour to aid the relief of those in need in several ways. (clause 3. 6) Our SPC Holidays prides itself, on its achievements with those people with ill health or disabilities, we have the use of several mobile homes which are vetted and risk assessed and we are looking within two years to purchase a wheelchair accessible mobile home with charity funds, for sole use of the charity, opposed to us hiring from external organisations. And, our SPC workshops encourage social integration which incorporates the promotion of mental or moral improvement and the promotion of the moral or spiritual welfare or improvement of the community, by educating our young people to make sound and well informed choices.

Square Pegs Charity come highly recommended - they do exactly what they say, namely help people who feel like a square peg that doesn't fit into a round hole (and who doesn't feel like that once in a while, or often...). Everyone who comes to them, is received with love, respect and support - how wonderful is that!
