St Andrew'S Prep

About St Andrew'S Prep

St Andrew’s is an independent preparatory school for boys and girls aged 9 months to 13 years, in the stunning town of Eastbourne.

St Andrew'S Prep Description

A school for boys and girls aged 9 months to 13 years, St Andrew’s Prep values childhood as the most important stage in one’s life; a time where social development through friendship and play is as important as academic development within the classroom. We passionately believe that prep school education is about opening doors to young minds and, whilst maintaining high academic standards, we strive to ensure that each pupil has as many doors as possible from which to choose.

We feel that this is an exceptional school; an environment which upholds the finest prep school traditions but also one which is forward thinking in preparing children for life in the 21st century. We seek to ensure that all pupils are equipped with the essential qualities of kindness and compassion and that when each child leaves he or she is skilled and confident to perform in many different arenas.

The quality of music at St Andrew’s Prep once again shone through this morning at St John’s Church. Our Soloists and choirs sang superbly at a very moving festive service. Well done to all involved.

St Andrew’s Prep experienced some West End magic yesterday as the whole school was treated to a surprise performance of that well known pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Legends, by our amazing staff and gappies. There were many unforgettable characters from Snow White (Mrs Radley), Prince Charming (Mr Haywood) and The Wicked Queen (Mrs Sheridan) to the bumbling fools (Mr Jones and Mr Anderson), a pantomime horse (Mrs Garbett and Miss Molyneaux) and not one, not two but three dogs plus two very, very ugly sisters (Mr Tomsett and Mr Barter). The audience joined in with the songs and flooded the gym with rapturous applause as the curtain closed. This was dream entertainment for the children on the penultimate day of term. Three cheers for the writers/directors Mrs Veitch and Mrs Radley and to the whole cast and crew.

Our sports scholars experienced the fabulous Project 150 Sports Hall at Eastbourne College earlier this week. Alongside the Sports Department, the children explored training zones with Jess Simmonds (Head of Academic PE) and discussed how performance is tracked in GCSE PE. Dan Sheppard (Head of Strength and Conditioning) taught the pupils how to improve their strength training techniques and the importance of flexibility training while Mike Harrison (Director of Sport) tested their fitness and focussed on the processes of how to improve performance data.

Year 8 had to decide on their chosen target market for their lighting projects before they brainstormed design ideas for their assignment. Among the mix were elephants, fairies, aeroplanes, flowers and cartoon characters. The children then learnt how to transform the images in a 2D CAD program on the computer before the design was laser-cut at Eastbourne College. Back in the workshop the pupils learnt about electronic components and constructing basic circuits before assembling their projects using mass production aids such as jigs and templates.

Who doesn’t love a bit of pass the parcel, a disco and a tea-time feast at their Christmas party? The perfect way for the Juniors to finish off their day yesterday.

The St Andrews Prep U13 table tennis team claimed the Sussex Team championships played at Willingdon Community School on Monday 10 December. The boys played with passion and skill only dropping one game to win convincingly and claim the title. They now advance to the zone finals to represent the county in London on the 19 January 2019 alongside our U11 team who won their championship earlier in the year. Congratulations to Magnus the team Captain, Ollie, Bill and Alex the vice-Captain.

On Wednesday, the Friends of St Andrew’s organised a fantastic Christmas shopping event in the school. The children had an array of options for presents for their family members and they made their choices very carefully. Some of them had very definite ideas of what mum or dad would love!

Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas made a very welcome visit to the Nursery and Pre-Prep children today. The spellbound children told them how well they are behaving in the lead up to Christmas day and each received an early Christmas present before heading off to their Christmas disco. Ho ho ho!

Our Year 7 pupils completed their Buzzing Steady Hand Games in Design Technology and Innovation today. Each pupil made a plastic stand using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program which was laser cut at Eastbourne College. The children also learnt about basic electronic components and how to solder before making a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). Pupils worked in teams to fault-find and fix any circuits that did not work first time.

'Teaching children how to self-reflect without over-analysing themselves is crucial for building confident, happy children who have a strong understanding of the part they must play in their communities.' The school was delighted to host current parent Ian Marshall to deliver our Friday Lecture last week. Ian is a publisher and writer and his talk was based around his book “Class of 92”. While he is a lifelong fan of Manchester United, he spoke about the ten life lessons which he feels that we can all learn from the team that had in its ranks David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. These lessons are: working hard, being honest with yourself, seizing your opportunities, not always winning, not giving up, enjoying what you do, being patient, coping with setbacks, listening to the coach and that teamwork is crucial.
