Alex’s wheelie good fundraising challenge for St Ann's! 🚲
Alex Marsh, decided to take on the challenge of the 'Mallorca 312' – so named to reflect the kilometres covered – within 14-hours. The tough winding route, climbing mountains and exploring coastal paths, took him near the capital Palma, his home for the last seven years.
Alex hopes to raise £2,500 for St Ann’s from his adventure in memory of late uncles Ian Haig and Alan Haig who were both patients there.
... Alex said: "St Ann's isn't just a facility. It's a group of compassionate, hard-working individuals who provide genuine love and care. It receives only a third of its funding from the NHS and the rest comes from donations. Cycling is new to me and this was the biggest challenge I've ever done. Palma is a Mecca for large yachts and the owner of my yacht kindly made the biggest single donation to my fundraising."

Thanks to the kind generosity of Fred Done our Little Hulton hospice gardens have been transformed.
Fred Done, whose company BetFred has supported the hospice for many years, offered to fund work to improve the outside space at the hospice for patients to enjoy. He arranged for his personal gardeners to spend 12 days working at St Ann’s to transform the space.
"Many of our patients and their families like to sit outside of the hospice and spend time relaxing and unwinding, a...nd we know that they really enjoy being out in the fresh air. Fred and Betfred have been so incredibly supportive of St Ann’s over many years, and we’re enormously grateful. This latest kind donation really will make such a huge difference to the lives of our patients, and we can’t thank him enough." - Eamonn O’Neal, St Ann’s Chief Executive.
We’re currently celebrating 40 years since our Little Hulton site opened in 1979. His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester visited the hospice as part of our anniversary celebrations, and planted a commemorative magnolia genie tree in the gardens too.

A big good luck to a group of brothers and mates who are setting off an epic bike ride today! 🚵🏻
The group will be cycling 2,000kms from Barcelona to Manchester this June to raise funds for St Ann's in memory of Charlie Mitten who was cared for at St Ann's.
One of the group, Andy Mitten, explains why they're doing it:
... Dad had six months in acute and often unbearable pain. A man who never stopped complaining about Manchester United seldom complained about his own pain. It was awful to see a fit man diminish and you feel helpless. What can you do to help? We wanted to do something.
“Dad, we’re going to raise money by cycling from Barcelona to Manchester next year.” “That’s a bit much, son. How far is it?” “2,000 kilometres.”
I told him again a few week later.
“It’s a good idea son, but can’t you avoid the mountains?” “No dad, I can’t move the Pyrenees.”
Charles Samuel Mitten died on November 6th 2018 in St Ann’s Hospice, Little Hulton. He was 69.

Spotlight on our Cheadle shop!
Esme, is one of our cluster shop managers who looks after many shops, including the Cheadle shop, read her blog to find out more about the shop.
We are really lucky to have a beautiful and historic building for our Cheadle Shop which is located right on the high street in the centre of the village.
... It is well worth stopping by, if only to view its stunning interior with original 1930’s Art Deco features. The shop is housed in former tea rooms and coffee shop called the Premier Cafe which was opened over 80 years ago, the shop has retained many of the fixtures and fittings from its former life.
On the first floor there is a dedicated bridal department complete with a large changing room and we have recently changed the back room into a vintage style book room, where customers can relax and browse the books vinyl records and much more. It is a beautiful room with a stunning stained glass ceiling.
We're in need of more vintage style items, such as a small arm chair and table, and general vintage items, if anyone has any items that they would be willing to donate to the shop please get in touch with the shop and we can collect them.

Today draws to a close the end of Volunteers' Week, so we wanted to share a few photos from the week.
There's been lots going on across the hospice to celebrate our amazing volunteers, including thank you parties and afternoon teas and all volunteers have been able to get free tea/coffee and cake to say thank you!
These local heroes gave St Ann’s a staggering 73,304 hours of their time last year, which is phenomenal – we simply couldn’t continue to carry out all of our servi...ces without their support.
If this week has inspired you and you’d like to find out more about volunteering opportunities at St Ann’s, please visit https://buff.ly/2Eb0hNh or call us on 0161 498 3653.

Today we're sharing another one of our fantastic volunteer's stories as part of Volunteers' Week.
Tony has been an invaluable member of the St Ann’s team since he started volunteering with us a staggering 40 years ago.
Tony works in our gardens three days a week, and also still works a regular shift on our wards. For the last few years we have been relying on him as our main gardener, and he has never let us down. His support and commitment is exceptional.
... The positive feedback we receive from our patients and their visitors is a testament to the hard work that he has put in over the many years. The garden is a peaceful, beautiful place for people to sit – whatever the season – and we’re grateful for that fact, as are our patients.
Tony knows that people often go through difficult times when they’re at the hospice, and he’s always happy to talk to them when they’re in the garden, saying hello and putting them at ease.
He always makes sure there are flowers that patients can enjoy both outside, and in the wards, and he is keen to ensure that anyone coming to the hospice feels as comfortable and ‘at home’ as possible.
We receive lots of comments about how lovely our gardens look, and how the outside space of the hospice is just as important as the inside. This is true, and we’re enormously grateful for the work Tony, and our other volunteers, do.
Earlier this year we had a special visit from His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester, as part of our celebrations for our Little Hulton hospice’s 40th birthday, and with the help of Tony he planted a special commemorative tree to mark the occasion.

This week we’re celebrating Volunteers' Week, and as part of it we will be sharing stories of some of our fantastic volunteers who support us in so many ways.
First up is Linda, our Volunteer Coordinator.
Linda’s husband was a patient at the hospice and sadly passed away in 2011, which prompted Linda to start volunteering to give something back for the care her husband received and the support St Ann’s offered her and her family.
... Linda’s volunteering time often exceeds 25 hours a week, during this time she helps interviewing and training our new volunteers and she also takes the time to cover extra shifts, and she can always be seen helping out over Christmas and bank holidays.
She is a great ambassador and can often be found drumming up more support and persuading volunteers to help out for an extra few hours!
Last year, we sadly lost our long-standing Volunteer Coordinator, Ernest Worsley, and it was a shock that was felt throughout the hospice, especially for Linda who worked very closely with Ernest. Linda has been instrumental in keeping everything running smoothly so we want to say a big thank you to her.
We rely on the goodwill and hard work of our volunteers, like Linda, to help the patients in our local community. Linda is a true unsung hero, she works tirelessly and expects nothing back from it.
