Antonian DPhil wins teaching award
Giovanni Cadioli (MSc Russian and East European Studies, 2012; DPhil, 2013-) was awarded the prize of Best Postgraduate teacher at the Oxford Student Union Student-led Teaching Awards.
Cadioli received the prize at the Oxford Town Hall on the 10th May. The prize was for teaching delivered over the past three terms, including courses such as 'Europe Divided, 1914-1989', 'Revolutions of 1989' and 'Culture, Identity and Politics in Cold War Eu...rope, 1945-1968'.

Fascinating gift to MEC Archive in memory of Professor Ali Reza Sheikholeslami and Dr Abdel-Aziz Fahmy Sadek
The Middle East Centre is pleased to announce the generous gift to the MEC Archive of two historic photograph albums of the wedding of Princess Fawzia Fuad of Egypt to Crown Prince (later Shah of Iran) Mohammad Reza Pahlavi that took place in Cairo in 1939. The gift has been made by Cynthia May Sheikholeslami in memory of Dr Abdel-Aziz Fahmy Sadek and Professor Ali Rez...a Sheikholeslami.
Dr Abdel-Aziz Fahmy Sadek (1933-1995) served in the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities at Tura al-Asmant and then as a Senior Egyptologist, as Acting Director-General and then as Director-General at the Centre of Documentation and Studies on Ancient Egypt. He studied at Prague and at Lyons obtaining his PhD in 1976. He taught at the University of Helwan and the University of Alexandria and took part in archaeological work at Tura al-Asmant, the Nubian salvage campaign (recording temples that were submerged or moved prior to the completion of the Aswan High Dam) as well as working in western Thebes, Dakhla and the Valley of the Queens. He published in the Collection Scientifique of the Centre and published his thesis ‘Contribution à l'étude de l'Amdouat: Les variantes tardives du Livre de l'Amdouat dans les papyrus du Musée du Caire’ (Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis 65).
Professor Ali Reza Sheikholeslami (1941-2018) was a visiting senior fellow at St Antony’s College in 1978 and SCR Member 1991-1999. He was former Professor and Soudavar Chair of Persian Studies at Wadham College. Reza Sheikholeslami was appointed the first holder of the Soudavar Chair in 1990 and held the position until his retirement in 2006. He received a BA from Columbia, MAs from Northwestern and Oxford, a PhD from the University of California, Los Angelas and held academic positions at the University of Washington and Harvard. He published works on the 'Political Economy of Saudi Arabia' and 'The Structure of Central Authority in Qajar Iran 1871-1896.'
