The Parish Church of Saint Chad on the Knavesmire, or St Chad’s, is the parish Church for South Bank, York. It has occupied its prominent position close to the racecourse and opposite the old Terry’s site since it was founded in 1926 and has played an important part in local life ever since.

St Chad’s is a place of worship and a community hub. We are a busy parish church with a range of services and a community hub for use by many local organisations. We are a place of quiet and prayerful reflection and we are also a place of beautiful music and social events. St Chad’s is your church and is here for whatever you need but first and foremost we are a worshipping church dedicated to the glory and love of God here in South Bank.

We are, in many ways, an ‘ordinary’ parish church but peer inside and you will see people of all ages, backgrounds and traditions, all of whom belong here. You will see the uniformed organisations that meet regularly and the Toddlers and Playgroup sessions that fill the hall with games and laughter twice a week.

We have a well-established relationship with the local Primary School, 50 yards down the road. This provides the opportunity to join in the life of the school which chooses to use the church for assemblies and carol services. They enjoy and value the contact with the church.

As the parish church for South Bank, St Chad’s is here for you throughout your life – not just Sunday mornings. Together we can mark life’s milestones – the birth of a baby, a marriage or saying farewell to a loved one.
