For many people looking after a terminally ill partner, friend or family member at home is “just something they do”, they don’t think of themselves as the person’s carer.
Each caring role is different and can happen gradually or suddenly, it can impact on our money, benefits, health and well-being, getting out and about and working and learning.
This group is a great opportunity to meet others who understand how you feel, share your worries and ask questions - a chance to ha...ve some 'me' time once a week. Group starts: 📌 Friday 14th September (this will run once a week until Friday 2nd November) ⌚ 10:30am - 12:30pm 📍 The Hospice, Myland Hall, Colchester 📞 Call 01206 890360 to find out more

As part of their Birkett Long £50 Challenge in aid of St Helena fundraising Harris & Hoole Colchester offered a Latte art masterclass lastnight.
The team explored the history of the coffee bean, the variety you can choose, how the bean grows and how they select which coffee beans they use for their famous beverages. The evening then moved on to teaching everyone how to make the amazing designs on the top of latte's, those ones that make you say WOW!
Our Corporate Fundraiser, Lizzie, had a great time experimenting with her creative side, sadly she's accepted she needs a little more practice when it comes to latte art!

Spreading the word about the care we can provide to those in our community is one of the most important part of our work. We've had great support from the companies taking part in our Birkett Long £50 Challenge in aid of St Helena Hospice the last couple of months, promoting St Helena and raising much needed money. But who will win the 'Promoting St Helena' award?🏆📣 with just three weeks of the challenge left, all will be revealed soon...

You're just amazing. We cared for mum at home but the support you provided and still are providing is out of this world. The care and compassion you showed my mum and my family helped us to give mum the ending she asked for. She was at home in her room, pain free and surrounded by people who loved her. Wendy who just happened to be here when she passed was just incredible, and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you so so much xx

We would like to give heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful nurses, consultants, staff, volunteers (everyone) who looked after our father Brian Leverett during the lead up to and the end of his life. My dads words were 'I feel like a king' and I will never forget that. The nurses in particular showed my dad compassion, loving care and dignity at all times, they work so hard and still managed to support all the family too. No words are enough to thank you, all of you. Not forgetting tea and cake with the lovely Rose on Tuesday's & Thursdays. RIP Dad who sadly passed away at 6.30am today

We lost my Dad in early April and although he wasn't in the Hospice as he wanted to be at home, the support my Mum got from Debbie and other support staff at St Helena's Hospice (SHH) was outstanding. They were always at the end of the phone and she needed that when she didn't know who to call or what to do in difficult times. As Dad was cremated Mum didn't want anyone wasting money on flowers that can't be put on a grave so she asked for immediate family flowers only and if anyone wanted to give donations to SHH it would be appreciated. Mum presented a cheque raised in Dads honour to Debbie Pigeon for £700. ❤️

Want to say thank you to all the staff who looked after my auntie Sandra Hinson, she might have only been in the hospice for a few days but you made them comfortable for her. My family cannot thank you enough for all the help and support you gave her and us. She passed away peacefully this morning, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts ❤❤

This is a caring and safe space with a hard working team of so many people who really care about easing pain for those suffering and making every day count and be better for them and their family. There is a huge support base available in a wide variety of ways such as day services, in patient unit, counselling and much more. This is a place that cares and can help the worst of times be that bit better.

User

The hospice is an amazing place, they cared for my dad who passed away in there.the staff and volunteers are amazing.i lost my mum a while ago so have been going to a bereavement group.it was my first time yesterday.its a very peaceful place.

Thank you to all the staff at St Helena hospice who cared so lovingly for my dad, Keith Cosson who died in your wonderful hospice on Sunday, a special thank you to Dr Joe whom dad took a real shine to, the compassion you all showed to dad and our family will never be forgotten, thank you xxx

User

Thank you for taking care of my amazing late Grandad. The nurses were lovely and were interested in getting to know what a character he was. They even helped him arrange a meal which they had in the lounge at a private candlelit table for his upcoming anniversary which he sadly wouldn’t make. We cannot thank you enough and will be collecting for St Helena at his funeral. Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Thank you so much

User

St Helena's cared for not only Dad but the rest of our family to. The homeliness of the hospice brought much needed comfort and allowed us to be with Dad 24/7, enabling him to pass away peacefully.

My wife stayed at the hospice for 3 days, in the in patients unit. The staff from nurses down to the domestic staff were brilliant. On the last day my wife was in the hospice, she had a jacuzzi bath, she said i was brilliant with music and flashing lights. When my wife was diagnosed with cancer we had a visit from 2 carers from the Hospice at Home service. We had a visit from them everyday until my wife passed away (28th January) they were caring and compassionate, and my wife and the carers always had a laugh. In short i cant recommend the treatment we received enough. If i could give 10 stars I would. In fact we are having a donation box at my wifes funeral for the hospice.

User

My mum was at the hospice for 19 days before losing her battle to cancer. The staff were amazing and were there not only for my mum but for my entire family. They were kind and compassionate. They made what was the most difficult time in my life that little bit easier to cope with xxx

Since my mum passed away, we have tried to raise as much money as we can. Her place of work raised over £1000, my brother and I donated £4000 and I have recently raised £700 along with my friend Kate doing the pier to pier walk. The hospice deserves every penny for the work they do. Thank you to everyone there xxx
