About St. Mark'S Hospital Foundation
We raise money for bowel disease research and education at St Mark's Hospital, with the aim of creating a future free from the fear of bowel disease.
Unfortunately, as we are the charity arm of the hospital, we are unable to help with medical inquiries.

Congratulations to the Cheltenham Goods For Sale Group for reaching a massive ┬Ż70k fundraising including gift aid which helps to fund the Tissue Engineering research project here at St Marks!
Many diseases lead to people losing large sections of their bowels and the result of this is a serious impact on their health and quality of life. Human bowel transplants suffer from rejection and patients need to be on immuno suppressants for the remainder of their lives, which can lead... to health problems. There is a severe shortage of donors. An exciting alternative is to be able to grow replacement bowels through tissue engineering. This involves three stages. Stage one - Creating the bowel structure which comprises of removing all the active cells from the structure leaving a bowel scaffold. Stage two - Involves identifying the cell source to repopulate the scaffold. Stage three - Controlling and manipulating to grow as functional bowel cells that produce motility, digestion and absorption.
St MarkŌĆÖs Hospital Foundation in partnership with Northwick park Institute for medical research has achieved successes in stage one of producing a clinically viable bowel scaffold and stage two of identifying adipose (fat) stem cells to repopulate (seed) the scaffold. St MarkŌĆÖs is now looking to move forward to the third and final stage of applying technology such as a bio-reactor and advanced scientific knowhow to manipulate and grow bowel functionality from the stem cells that have been identified as suitable.
Thank you for your continued support! Your fundraising helps to bring us one step closer to our goal of a future free from the fear of bowel disease :)
