Picture of the day: Just before it went dark, the sun lit up the church tower against an inkily dramatic sky in a startling shade of burnt orange. Thought we'd take a photo and share it with you...

A Pleasing Terror Two ghost stories by M R James Performed by R M Lloyd Parry
... ***** Wonderful, magical storytelling The Daily Mail
Over a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. This gripping one man show retells two of the earliest and eeriest.
In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees…
In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford…
www.nunkie.co.uk
Don't miss this opportunity to experience the chilling tales by M R James in the gothic surrounds of one of the country's finest ecclesiastical buildings, St Mary Redcliffe Church.
The performance itself will take place in The Arc Cafe to the front of the church www.arccafe.co.uk
During the interval refreshments will be served in the church itself and there will be a special opportunity to experience the atmospheric interior of this architectural wonder by night.

Queen Elizabeth the First thought it 'the most beautiful church in the West Country' and so it remains

User

One of my favourite churches in Britain, magnificent craft of early English, impressive collection of gargoyles. Personally I love ceiling in North porch and nave. Always warm welcome, good place for lunch - arch cafe. If you visiting Bristol, you must see this place.

My most early memory of St Mary's was Christmas Eve 1964, when my now husband suggested we attend midnight mass, have done so for the last 50 years with the occasional miss. We were late arriving and had to stand under the Christmas tree it was magical especially with the haunting music from the choir such wonderful memories. St Mary's is truly a beautiful church.

I've only been 3months in Uk and this is one of the best buildings I've seen here..started to know more about history and religion with a lovely Chinese version brochure..the staff were all nice!

User

I was fortunate enough to be in a group who had a Blue Badge guide to show us around this beautiful place. So much information to take in but fascinating. The cafe downstairs was very good as well. Staff friendly.

User

I walked, cycled and drove past this imposing Church for 20 years. Why didn’t I come inside before? The light airy beauty of the high plain glass windows compares to Portsmouth Cathedral.

Many churches are imposing, grand, opulent or even dreary. Not so St Mary Redcliffe.

Services are inspirational and those presiding are grounded “normal” approachable people.

Well done to all involved, you really are doing a great job

I spent an hour in St Mary Redcliffe yesterday. It's a lovely place to be and the staff are very welcoming. It strikes a good balance between being a functioning place of worship and a tourist attraction. There is plenty for visitors to see without diminishing the spiritual value of the place by over-commercialising it.

It's a rewarding building for photography and next time I visit, I will take my camera with me!

User

I attended the ' Stories of Hope ' Lent Appeal Concert and it was a wonderful evening. We had such a lovely warm welcome and the Choirs & Musicians performed superbly in this beautiful Church. I will attend again !

User

First time in the church had a lovely time singing at Carol service with the family x

User

Fab evening for the Carol service by candlelight last night. Will definitely go again

User

Carols by candelight at St Mary Redcliffe is the perfect evening to really feel the Christmas Spirit. Come most years and it is beautiful and atmospheric. Singing by candelight only in such a magnificent building is a real experience.

Attended Christmas with The Salvation Army on Saturday. This beautiful, historic church provided a beautiful backdrop for this Carol Concert. Loved the brass band and the opportunity to visit this church.

User

Amazing, beautiful, peaceful. With help from the staff, I was able to locate the tomb of Thomas Mede, my 16th great grandfather. Certainly made the experience an exciting one for me.
