About St Mary'S Hospice

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness.

St Mary'S Hospice Description

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved.

Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day clinics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home.
We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness.

At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3. 2 million a year.

Supporter Geraldine Bromley (second from left) decided her days of sponsored walks were over - so grew her hair then had it all shaved off to raise money for St Mary's instead! She proudly handed over £270 this week, with the support of her colleagues Angela and Kath, and son Chris, who all work at Morrisons with her. St Mary's nursed Geraldine's husband Neil before he sadly passed away last year and her fundraising is in his memory. Thank you Geraldine from all of us.

Huge congratulations to Derek Fryer - at the tender age of 65, he successfully completed the the Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge last weekend - a fundraising challenge inaugurated by the famous fell runner Joss Naylor in 1990 as a challenge to the over 50’s. Joss’s challenge involves climbing 30 tops, crossing some 48 miles of mountain terrain and ascending and descending nearly 17000 feet. The route starts in Pooley Bridge, Ullswater and finishes at Greendale Bridge, Wasdal...e.
Derek completed the challenge in an amazing 22 hours and 20minutes (a maximum of 24hours is allowed for the challenge). He chose St Mary's Hospice as his charity for the challenge as we have provided support to his family and friends in the past. If you'd like to show your admiration, all donations welcome here. Well done Derek from all of us at St Mary's.
