It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful cartographer and friend Rosie Duncan. Rosie has been a stalwart fixture of Geography at Staffordshire University for 21 years and in this time she has been involved in all sorts of student learning and fieldwork activities with us. Rosie has generously shared her passion for cartography and design with countless students helping them to craft and refine their graphical academic submissions.
Rosie also pla...yed a huge part in our fieldwork activities in the Peak District and Barcelona. She created many detailed and valuable learning resources and faultlessly organised logistics much to the praise of staff and students alike. Her boundless energy in the field supported flagging spirits amongst the bunch whilst ascending (and descending) the hills around Castleton. She dressed far more than her fair share of blisters! It is this friendship, care and comradery that will be missed the most.
Rosie has been a great ambassador and advocate for Geography at Staffordshire University and she will be sorely missed by her colleagues as well as all the students that she has helped along through their degrees over the years.
Rosie Duncan Cartographer, Geography at Staffordshire University 1997 to 2018 - 'A map is not just a piece of paper, it's a passport to adventure.'
If you have any memories or words that you would like to share please post them below or message us privately so that we can pass them on to her family.
We pass on our deepest and most sincere condolences to Rosieβs close family and friends.

What a difference a few days make! Last Friday our Geography with Mountain Leadership students were at this very sport drinking in the views in the late afternoon autumnal sunshine. This perfectly illustrates the highly changable weather conditions that we expereince in the British mountains. ποΈπ¨οΈβοΈ
Here are a few photos from last weekβs Geography with Mountain Leadership mountain day in Snowdonia. The students were blessed with fantastic weather and far reaching views. This made for easy navigation, a rarity for a November mountain day!
Level 4 students got to grips with macro navigation techniques using 1:50000 maps. The students ascended Glyder Fawr via Y Gribin. This grade 1 scramble allowed our Level 4 students to gain some experience on steeper more exposed terrai...n whilst the Level 5s practiced route selection and guiding.
The views from Glyder Fawr (1001m) were magnificent as the sun hung low over the Snowdon Massif. The walk ended with a head torch lit descent of Y Garn pausing briefly at Cwm Idwal to enjoy the starry night sky and a few shooting stars. All in all a great day in the mountains. β°βοΈπβ°π
